    Snowing out in Gorham

Not sure about other mountains but I have seen a small parking lot full of diesel generators operating the snowmaking equipment at Wildcat (and probably the lifts too, although I don't think they were turning the day I hiked past.) They shoot for the longest seasons as well as that helps them...

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

Let's try and keep this thread open by following these guidelines: Post factual data and/or links to the source (remembering not to post more than a teaser paragraph of content you do not own) If that data pertains to the preservation or destruction of the backcountry, so much the better...

    Snowing out in Gorham

Cannon put their snowgun photos on Facebook yesterday. Most ski areas are at least testing the snow making system(s) as soon as it gets below freezing for a while, even if that snow doesn't stick. Killington is planning to open tomorrow :) Tim

    Expectations For A Hard Shell

I've never been able to bring myself to spend $400 on a so-called waterproof-but-breathable hard shell. I will, without a doubt, overwhelm any garment's ability to vent moisture from within and invariable end up damp if not soaked. Unless, of course, I am going prohibitively slowly. Tim

    snowshoes

One year, I actually tried this in my backyard. I couldn't find the empirical results with a quick search either :( I weigh just south of 200# before the pack goes on and best I recall there was 18" or so of champagne powder. I tried all four pairs of snowshoes, including 8x22" Denali EVO...

    Acadia National Park, September 2021

Acadia has long been a bucket list item for me, and last week, my wife and I were able to spend 5 days there, visiting most of the checkbox places, while avoiding most of the deluge of Hurricane Larry. Day 1: We traversed Cadillac Mountain from the North Ridge Trail to the South Ridge Trail...

Lost the soles of his Boots

Sounds like a wholly electronic means might be effective. GPS fencing, for example. Not that the Forest Service is up to speed on modern conveniences ("Wilderness provides outstanding opportunities for solitude or primitive and unconfined recreation") and not that Fish and Game has the budget...

    Foster's Crossroads - gone?

Irving at Fabyan's was getting a fuel delivery and was closed so I went to Yaya's and had to wait to pump, wait to give my card, wait to pick it up (no pay at the pumps :(). There were two people cooking inside and a bunch of people eating and bunch more waiting... so I'd say it was hopping...

Parking Fees at Franconia Notch State Park?

I added an actual poll, best I could, so the results would tally in one place. If you are not voting No - 0% or Yes - 100%, it would be interesting to hear where you think the 100% - n% should go if not for local parking and trail maintenance... i.e., towards HikeSafe. I also changed the title...
