Who remembers Moss Tents and other innovators of the time?

I, too, still have an Early Winter pile jacket vintage mid-1970s that I no longer wear but will take to my grave because of its sentimental value. The jacket had a thick collar (no hood) and was long enough to cover my a$$, which was great for riding chairlifts. The jacket really did “pile up,”...

Who remembers Moss Tents and other innovators of the time?

Yes! Jack, not Jerry. At least I got the J correct. 🙂 I hung into one of their risqué catalogs for years. Maybe I still have it? Maybe worth a bundle?

    Snowshoes??

Agree with Rocket 21, and hoping that the OP did not destroy the ski tracks on Greeley Ponds Trail. My MSR Denali’s are now into their 20th season, pretty much indestructible except for one replacement of hinge plate binding on each shoe, now just five peaks short of two NH48 grid rounds. I...

Car Break ins at Rocky Branch Parking on RT 16

But, is not the deductible about the same as repair costs for a smashed side window whether your own or a rental car? So you pay one way or the other, even if you do not stupidly leave cash and/or credit cards in the vehicle. At least sound systems are more laborious to steal now, I think.

This friday (after a snowstorm) may be a decent opportunity for a pleasant backcountry kick and glide day trip

Or, can pay $10 to park at Seven Dwarfs motel near the end of Little River Road, which is a couple miles closer to Haystack Road trailhead for the Fire Warden’s Trail on Hale. Also, lots of understory is growing in now, so need a deeper base to ski than in the past.

4” of fluff at 600’ elevation in Thornton, but we are always the donut hole in snowfall numbers.

This friday (after a snowstorm) may be a decent opportunity for a pleasant backcountry kick and glide day trip

Cannon “first tracks” is my plan for Friday, before the vacation week throngs arrive (hoping that some of them sleep in). Kanc Hairpin Turn to Lincoln Woods via Cedar Brook, Wilderness, and East Side trails on xc ski radar if we get a deeper snowpack in the next couple of weeks, as there is not...

Car Break ins at Rocky Branch Parking on RT 16

Excellent advice. And, obviously carry your wallet or purse with you, and do not leave valuables in vehicle if you insist on locking. Years ago I began posting a “no cash or credit cards inside” note on the dash and have not been broken into since, but probably just lucky, although one time at...

This friday (after a snowstorm) may be a decent opportunity for a pleasant backcountry kick and glide day trip

Best suggestion is park at busy trailheads to reduce risk of damage from break-ins.

Death, Judgement and Empathy on Franconia Ridge

The public record was posted at the NHF&G website on 11/23/2022. On late Tuesday afternoon “…….tracks and items belonging to Sotelo were located at the headwaters of Lafayette Brook.” Sotelo was located at 11:15 the next morning and extracted by a NHARNG Blackhawk. Some of us in the SAR...

Mr Pizza in Gorham is Closing (Now Reopened under new owners)

Good to hear favorable reports on Big Day Brewing; will give them another try on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday when maybe not as crowded. Also, thanks for recent history on Sunday River Brewing, as I likely last visited during the controversial ownership.

Mr Pizza in Gorham is Closing (Now Reopened under new owners)

Have not been to SRB in over three years, but my recollection from last visit is same as yours. Ditto for Big Day Brewing last fall, where I waited for over 20 minutes at the bar to order a beer and then walked out after not getting served.

How do we keep folks from hiking Saturday?

There are legal standards to determine simple negligence, gross negligence, and recklessness, which one could argue fall on a continuum from least to most offensive. I am not a lawyer, but I can look up this stuff on the internets. :-)

Cannon Mountain Tram replacement in the news

Yup, a bunch of us Olde Timahs here. :-)

Cannon Mountain Tram replacement in the news

As a lifelong Cannon skier, I loved the Tram, past tense, because I now ski Cannon only on weekdays to avoid the crowded slopes and the Tram no longer runs on weekdays, other than an occasional Monday and the past few weeks while the Zoomer triple chair has been shut down in need of repairs...

    Sleeping Out Tonight?

Yup, I stopped taking quinine years ago, even one small tab.

    Sleeping Out Tonight?

I have found that rehydrating with electrolytes even at home following a long hike helps combat leg cramps, and more effectively than Vit I and some of the other remedies noted above.

How do we keep folks from hiking Saturday?

One snowmobile crash in Columbia now posted on the F&G site, so perhaps hikers made it through the weekend unscathed. There was a decrease in the number of reports for Saturday but lots for Sunday on the NETC site.

    Sleeping Out Tonight?

I was thinking about trying out my -40 F Dark Star that I have not used since Denali in 2004, but it is only -12 on my deck, so not cold enough. :-)
