    argon70 atoms65 or aether 60/70

Agreed -- side pockets are a bit tight, but all else considered, these are nice packs. I have the Atmos 50, as well, and can stuff quite a bit into it. My next purchase from Osprey would probably be the Atmos 65 (one of the models that you are currently considering).

    Isolation via Glen Boulder?

And just another reason why it's much nicer to hike Rocky Branch in the winter (along with the standard bushwhacks).

Checking in From the AT, Part 4

I think that's a key incentive for many of us to hike -- the clearing of the head. Keep up the posts; it's good to read them!

    Random Great North Woods Shots

Very nice picture of the spring variant of the Mustard White, Pieris oleracea. (The summer variant does not have the dark-edged veins on the outer hind wings.) Nicely done!

Will do -- planning a trip up soon to check things out, and then at least one more for photography.

1 billion dollar development plans for the Mt. Washington Hotel at Bretton Woods

Update on the Bretton Woods development... It's in foreclosure and the land is now up for auction. See the story on NHPR's web site here. What a difference two years makes.

See: http://www.newenglandtrailconditions.com/nh/viewreport.php?entryid=4847 It looks like Osseo is snow-free.

Thanks, Jason -- I have to confess, though, that these plants are now growing in my back yard; I planted them there last year in the hopes of doing just this: photographing them.

The book is still in print -- you can order directly from the publisher, or pick it up from The Mountain Wanderer.

    Interesting names of trails

I was always under the impression that the trail -- opened circa 1938-40 -- was named after the brook, along which part of the new trail ran (and still runs). I believe that the brook has carried this name since well before the trail was constructed. From our pals at Wikipedia, the word...

    Interesting names of trails

From the 1917 AMC Guide: "About 1883 Mr. E. B. Cook cut a path from the old logging road leading up the valley of Cold Brook to a junction with Lowe's Ravine Path...he marked the entire route as far as Lowe's Ravine Path with his woodland signature—three blazes, short, long and short; hence the...

Thanks, Kevin! (On an unrelated note: "Damn you, Talbot, and your first-of-the-year-Hepatica picture! Damn you -- you beat us all! Seriously -- that's some fine, fine, scoping out of the Hepatica. Some of us up here are looking at the foot of snow still on top of where the Hepatica usually blooms.)

I hiked up early -- 2:30 am start from Great Gulf. New crunchy crust down below, but about a foot to two feet of new powder beginning around the steeps past the Osgood Tentsite. Saw two pine martens (one on the road on to the trailhead, the other near the trailhead) -- always a bonus.
