Looking like a snow dump up North

That brought back memories - New Zealand has a similar website, complete with "did you feel it?" submission form. But there were a lot more dots on the New Zealand map. (The USGS site includes lots of quakes from around the world, but if you compare to national sites like New Zealand's...

    Water Bottles -- 2022

I've been using vacuum insulation (a.k.a. Thermos) for many years. A bit heavier than some alternatives, but much more effective.

    Presby Brothers Buy Mt. Agassiz

I went looking for trails, they're not on the FS topos but they are on MapBuilder and also here: https://www.trailforks.com/trails/into-the-wild-416477/ is the summit trail, it connects via a bit of road to: https://www.trailforks.com/trails/shoulder-roll/ 130 acres is just enough for a...

Has anyone here ever come across human remains in the woods?

Once I didn't find a corpse, but should have. Early spring hike, noticed an awful smell above treeline but dismissed it - thought it was a moose if I thought about it at all. Somebody else hiking the same trail a day or three later followed the smell to the source, and I read the resulting SAR...

more New England mountain lion rumors

Your oaks are probably around a hundred years old; the whole area was pretty well denuded throughout the 19th century. I wonder if you've seen two different hawks. Red-tails are large and like high perches when they're not soaring above the hill; they specialize in small mammals. But...

more New England mountain lion rumors

Fox Park in itself isn't nearly big enough to support a cougar, but it's got enough wooded connections that I don't particularly doubt the report. A cat would have to cross interstate 95, but that's about the only real obstacle, and there are several underpasses. Many years ago a moose made it...

    Hiking with Sticks and Stones

IIRC, some years back some joker left a bowling ball (a real one, not candlepin) on top of one of the ADK peaks. Stayed there a while before somebody volunteered to carry it down. (From the headline I thought this thread was going to be about self-defense on the trail.)

Parking Fees at Franconia Notch State Park?

Hard to answer the percentage question without knowing a lot more. Parking fees need to be administered of course (somebody has to collect the money), and enforced (somebody has to patrol the lot and ticket non-payers), but there's also the increased traffic to the other lots, demand for...

Industrial Archeology: what's this scoop for?

the Wild River trail today still runs on top of extensive earthworks, obviously originally built for a railway. (Except for a couple of spots where the river widened and erased the railway.) There's no way a lightweight scoop like the one in the photo did the real digging - that's why I was...

Industrial Archeology: what's this scoop for?

Thanks! (Merci, Grazie, arigato, spassiba, ta, shukran, dhanyavaad ... there, that should be long enough)

Industrial Archeology: what's this scoop for?

Found alongside the Wild River, not far from one of the old bridge sites. Date unknown. It's awfully shallow and flimsy for a dredge or shovel. It's made from a single sheet, yet those corner rivets are strongly reinforced for some reason. There are holes in the bottom, possibly for...

    Parking lot beta

I hadn't been north of the notches since the winter, boy was I shocked by the parking situation. The one positive development is that the crackdown on parking on the Franconia Notch parkway is working. I saw lots of new signs and ropes, but no cars, along much of Franconia Notch, mid-day...

What to Expect on the Trails This Summer NHPR's The Exchange

I just checked the NHSP website, and it seems they are no longer requiring reservations for access to Monadnock parking at the State Park trailheads. I guess it's going to get more crowded on the popular trails. A couple of weeks ago White Dot was busy, but White Cross was relatively quiet...

Falling Waters trail is looking better

Small rocks don't stay put when people step on them (which they will, whenever there's mud or snow, or just because). It's one thing to carry up a handful of gravel to help fill muddy holes - that can work on very busy trails though it's not terribly efficient.

Flat Mountain Pond Trail - in or out of Wilderness & bikeable?

Years ago somebody on VFTT posted a link to the documents that defined the Pemi wilderness (and possibly others, but that was the one I was interested in at the time). On a map, the boundaries follow the obvious ridgelines (e.g., Franconia ridge), but in fact they're defined as being X feet...

    Exo-skeletons to assist hikers

It's an extremely hard problem. There are control and feedback problems - you want to be able to lift a sledgehammer without getting tired, but still tighten a screw without smashing through the wall it's in. There are power problems - you want something for hiking, you need a battery that...

Its that time of year again - Tick Season

Not the case for me. New-hatched ticks are so tiny they're basically invisible. The ones I picked up were full-sized adults. Possibly, they all dropped off the same deer or herd of deer after their previous meal - there was plenty of evidence of recent deer activity.

Its that time of year again - Tick Season

I was wandering around Pawtuckaway on Saturday. Still traces of ice and snow in a few shadowy areas, but almost entirely dry ground. Followed the trails for half a day without incident, until I decided to bushwhack down from the Middle peak. That took maybe ten minutes; a quick check at the...

Help Me Change My Butt-Sliding Ways

What B said. And to make it easier, especially on descent, take off your snowshoes. I'll put on microspikes at the drop of a hat, too.
