AT alternative through the whites ...

The AT in the Whites wriggles a lot in order to stay up on the highest ridgelines. It's neither the most direct route nor the easiest, though it is the most scenic. Pick up the AMC maps (https://amcstore.outdoors.org/white-mountain-trail-map-set ) and you'll see some obvious alternatives...

    Busy SAR 2019 Season Continues

Barring accidents like dropping a water bottle off a cliff, it shows he either didn't study the map (to know where the water sources are, and how far apart) or didn't have the experience to estimate his water consumption in the weather conditions he encountered. I grant the latter isn't being...

John Oliver - Mount Everest discussion

Really hard to say without a better look but your proposed route looks truly nasty: exposed slab, then rotten-looking overhang, then snow cornice. I'd be tempted to stay alongside the main route, it looks like there's room just to the left. Either way, laying a new route at altitude is a...

    Busy SAR 2019 Season Continues

Yeah, lots of little give-aways that the reporter has not done any research. But if the paraphrase is accurate, I'm a bit annoyed at Colonel Kevin Jordan of New Hampshire Fish and Game. I understand it's his job to discourage the unprepared from attempting a one-day Pemi Loop, but there's no...

Mountains that have had their "summits" moved

Off the top of my head: A fair while ago a different peak of Wildcat was thought to be the highest. I think there were already trails to both, and I don't recall whether signs on the peak state(d) elevations, so possibly no changes needed except to lists and guidebooks. There are still...

    A Rescue Question

This was once very common, when prefab litters were unknown. If you had multiple rescuers you'd take turns, or have two of them do a "chair carry" (linking arms). In those days normal woodsman's equipment included a saw or hatchet, so you could build a litter or travois (semi-sledge), but...

    Recommended Hikes In PA

The Delaware Water Gap area (about an hour and a half east of McAdoo) offers good views, especially from Mt Tammany and Mt Minsi. A dense network of trails including the AT helps to handle the crowds from New York City, but if you can go on a weekday, that's best. A bit futher afield (three...

    Backpacking Meal Ideas

I'm not a fan of prepacked meals (e.g. Mountain House) - every one I try is too salty, and most are too small. For an extended hike in Alaska (bear cans mandatory) I made a spreadsheet of non-refrigerated foods and ranked them according to calories per gram and per ml, plus things like...

    hikes in the Adirondacks

re WolfJaw-Armstrong-Gothic: these peaks are close to each other in distance but the cols in the Great Range can be brutal. You drop about 500' between the two wolf jaws - it's similar in height and distance to the Madison-Adams col. A clear step up in difficulty compared to Champney Falls...

    hikes in the Adirondacks

How about Giant Mountain, near St Huberts? The route from Chapel Pond is a little more short-and-steep than your examples, but the Roaring Brook route (Roaring Falls trailhead) should be right up your alley.

    Interesting Stream 'Crossing'

I happened to be in Lake Placid with some spare time, so I confirmed today that there is a well-maintained, well-marked ski/snowmobile trail from the big dirt lot on Wesvalley Rd, that leads directly to the split. The trail crosses the east branch on a little bridge, but the land in the "gore"...

    Ossipee Mountains Land Conservation Easement

Here is the map from LRCT, scaled up: The new easement indeed connects the (LRCT-owned) summits of Larcom and Little Larcom to the Ossipee Mountains preserve. I would be pretty surprised if the easement did not allow for hiker access. ( edit to add: ) However, it looks to me like the...

    Not Your Typical Hike

Ah, good. I was wondering why VFTT's search function didn't return any useful results. On the plus side, searching for "Bale" inexplicably turned up a surprisingly enjoyable old thread about "snot rockets". PS Many details of the story reminded me of an outdoor encounter I once had with...

    Lower elevation peak suggestions

Here's some info on the Baldfaces: https://www.summitpost.org/north-baldface-south-baldface/180510 There are additional peaks in Evans Notch, some with fine views from the summit, but the Baldfaces give you an extended above-treeline hike. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Cardigan yet...

Missing Hiker - Mt Washington Area

New article says he bought a new coat, new boots, and two "ice picks" the same day he headed up the mountain solo. That's... better than not having a coat and boots, but it gives me no confidence that he knows how to use his equipment. Given the time elapsed, I'd say this one has already ended...

    Interesting Stream 'Crossing'

"Braiding", where streams continually cross and recross, happens all the time. You can see some incipient examples just downslope on your map, and tons of it on multiple scales in any flattish river system. Yours is a rarer example of a true X, where the upstream branches have separate...

Ways to determine summit elevations (outside USA)

I don't know anything about the Chinese government approach to mapmaking, but I doubt they have any more useful data than what's already on your maps. You can find elevation data sets from, say, the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, but that's useless for determining the heights of peaks -...

Pretty strong hints that its not a great stretch of weather to go hiking

I feel bad for anybody who cleared their schedule for a one-season 48 this winter. On the other hand, if you're able to snipe the good days there have been some beauts. Saturday was about as perfect as you could ever hope for, and snow conditions were great too.
