    Wilderness and invasives?

Generally speaking, I'd say I am a supporter of the idea that some places on the map ought to be left alone, as untouched by the human hands as possible. At least going forward. We all know that the areas that are designated WIlderness in the Whites have all been impacted heavily in the past by...

Smarts Mtn. & Mt. Cube loop 10/25/11

Nice. I'm glad you like the Dan Doan Trail. It has come a long way in the last few years. It also has a long way to go. What it lacks in views, it makes up for in solitude, in my book. I'm glad you found the Baker road extension, too. It makes for some interesting loops. As the Adopter...

My Epic Trek To Owls Head 10-22-11

Nice job,Phil! And I agree with Petch about Iso, athough there are many great ways to hike it. The first time I did it was from Lakes using the Camel Trail.

    2011 spring wildflower thread

Okay, this will likely be the last "spring" wildflower I post for this year! I know it is a terrible picture, but I'm trying to decide if this was either a Hooker's Orchid, or a Round-leaved orchid (or maybe something else altogether!)....I found this in western NH on the edge of the White...

    Little Tunnel Ravine 10-8-11

I just wish the pictures were actually in focus! We went in off from Benton trail...left it at about 2200', which was about 200' too high, as we hit some rather steep terrain on our way into the ravine. We climbed to about 2750' along the brook. The waterfalls started a fair bit lower than...

    Little Tunnel Ravine 10-8-11

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been at the overlook on the Benton Trail, and heard the cacophonous waterfall down in the ravine, and wondered if it might be worth a trip up in there to go see if it really is as big as it sounds. With the weather forecast as good as it gets for this time...

I did come across about two dozen college kids coming down Cardigan on West Ridge in there altogether....some even with no footwear! This was during a "full moon" hike!

About 10 years ago, a couple friends and I decided to hike from ME Jct to West Bridgewater on the AT. One of my hiking companions was a bit out of shape, and dressed a bit poorly for the adventure. Cotton shirt, cut-off jeans, cotton socks, and merrell jungle mocs. It was HOT. It rained the...

    2011 spring wildflower thread

I was on an island in the CT River this week, and came across these: alium tricoccum (ramps) chimaphila maculata (spotted wintergreen) Note the silty ground below the wintergreen. This island, which is generally above the flood zone, got almost completely flooded!

Orienteering is fun; or 9/10/11 at Patuckaway

A friend asked the kids and I if we wanted to go orienteering a while back, and we said "sure, sounds fun!". We didn't really know what we were signing up for, but any chance to get into the woods has got to be a fun time, so what the heck, right!? So yesterday morning, we were off the...

    Irene Storm Track

"Vermont is a state I love. I could not look upon the peaks of Ascutney, Killington, Mansfield, and Equinox, without being moved in a way that no other scene could move me. It was here that I first saw the light of day; here I received my bride, here my dead lie pillowed on the loving breast of...

    Irene Storm Track

I was along the White River in the Quechee/Pomfret area today (for work). I am dumbfounded at how high the water got, and how high it still was this afternoon. I've never seen anything like it. My brother's wedding reception was supposed to be at Simon Pearce this Sunday. We got the word today...
