    Mountain Bird Watch this spring

This is such a fun project to be involved with, and the training sessions are so engaging! I used to do Mt. Wolf. Last year I did two routes (Rocky Branch and Isolation). This year I'm doing Downes Brook and E. Sleeper.

    Vose Spur attempt; 2-10-13

A hearty group of three headed out to Carrigain Notch to attempt Vose Spur after "Nemo" (when did we start naming snow storms?). The parking lot had seen one pass of the plow at some point, but still had a good bit of snow in it. My Camry made it in (studded snow tires), but it was touch-and-go...

    Snow Spiders?

I saw one just last week walking around on Snow Mountain in Enfield, NH. The picture I took matches exactly with the one in Mary Holland's blog.

Updated 2012 GIS data layer for NH Conservation/Public Lands from GRANIT

Roy, in more than a few cases, it is the owner's name that is incorrect.

What quotations or phrases keep you going in difficult outdoor situations?

Chip, Dory's words enter mind on nearly every hike! Very funny!

Updated 2012 GIS data layer for NH Conservation/Public Lands from GRANIT

Just posting the usual disclaimer about this layer. Much of the land shown on this is NOT public land. It may be conserved, but that does not always mean there is public access provided for in the easement.

    Ankle Roll

Thanks! Will try that. Agreed! It as not a natural motion! I am learning to NOT always walk the boundary, but adjust my walk if there is a lot of sidehill. I'll try the suggestions.

    Ankle Roll

This is quite timely! For the past few years, I have been working at a job that keeps me outdoors a couple days a week, walking cross country. I have made the switch to low top trail runners for the warmer 1/2 the year, and feel generally that I do better than I might with stiff leather boots...

Put this on your reading list! "Bobcats Before Breakfast" by John Kulish

Roy, Quietman, and Andrew: Thanks for sharing! Harris Center does some great work. It doesn't surprise me that John Kulish would be involved with their organization.

Put this on your reading list! "Bobcats Before Breakfast" by John Kulish

A friend recommended I read this book recently, so I went to the local library to see about taking it out. Well, 4 months later, after they had finally been able to locate a copy in Essex Jct, VT, I finally got a call that it was in. What a fun read. The fellow who wrote it, John Kulish, made...

    Maple syrup

Back in the day, when it was still locally owned by George and Dave McLure (father and son), my dad was the production manager there. They bottled syrup of all grades, from Grade A fancy to Grade B for cooking. They took syrup from producers all over the region, including Maine, NH, Vt, NY, and...

This Year's Hiking Season, I am THANKful for....

I am thankful to have a job where I am paid to hike a couple days a week. I am thankful that the organization I work for protects places near schools and libraries so that there will be wild places for kids to explore. I am thankful to have seen: liverwort, wood lilies, showy lady's slippers...

    QR Codes

Many groups responsible for maintaining recreational resources are adding QR codes to trailhead kiosks and the like. The hope is that folks who make the connection that these places are available because of the continued existence of said organizations will more easily be able to contribute to...
