    W48 finish on Madison/Adams

I just mailed my application to the 4K footer committee.:D Even though the forecast was borderline as far as winds go, for some reason I felt like I owed it to the mountains to head out for my last peaks anyway. I've been turned around plenty of times on hikes in the winter, but not once for a...

    W48 finish on Madison/Adams

A lot has changed since I hike up Tecumseh in '99 at the age of 29 to bag my first NH 4K in winter. Licia and I moved back to VT, bought a 232 year old farmhouse, had three kids, and I completely changed careers for starters!:D After checking the current conditions on my smartphone (was...

I agree with bignslow's comments! You got me itching to go back to Madison and Adams, and I was just there yesterday! Nice!

Adams and MAdison via Valley Way for W48 finish 3-11-12

Figured we'd give Madison and Adams a shot today. The temps and visibility were forecast to be great, but we were concerned the winds would be too high for us to summit. Winds were increasing over the day, but were doable. They increased over the course of the day, and when we were on Adams...

    Bear Tree?

I always though Yellow Birch was quite hard and I use it for firewood often. I came across this chart which lists btu's per cord. I guess it IS softer, but not by too much. Maybe the beaver was taking down these trees to get at the smaller branches for food? I like the "dam the inlet" idea, too...

Backyard Coyote. First time we've seen one in the backyard.

Great shots! Beautiful animal! You can almost see the whole "energy balance sheet" thing that dsettahr? was describing at work!

A Quick Hike To Isolation, 2/11/2012

Nice! It's been a speedy-trail 2012 so far(mostly!) I'm glad to hear you liked the 'whack route Larry, Brewster and I laid down a few weeks ago. If we had stayed at the elevation we were at a bit longer, we would have come right out at the last crossing, but we knew we were turning around, so...

Zealand and the Bonds with Alex, Feb. 3-4, 2012

Trish, It was good to bump into you and Alex out there. We've crossed paths before and after hkes a few times, and once during (non-winter, though). I enjoyed reading your report. Actually the combination of all three accounts of Zealand/Bonds that day, taken together give an idea that even on...

Cannon Mountain - Environmental Damage, Hiking Prohibition, and SB217

I love my State! I can always find someplace to hike. It all depends on conditions. In a spring like '10, things were dried out really early, Last year, not so much.

Routes for VCES Mountain Bird Watch

I just snagged Engine Hill and Isolation. After a one year hiatus, it will be good to be back!:D I'll hope to do it as a three day trip if I get a good window of weather.

Personal Winter NH 4K hiking trends

    SO, I'm looking at my nearly completed NH Winter 4K sheet, and noticed how many peaks I did per year since I hiked my first NH 4K in winter in 1999 (some were duplicates). Here goes: 1999: 1 2000: 0 2001: 1 2002: 0 2003: 0 2004: 1 2005: 1 2006: 1 2007: 5 2008: 5 2009: 8 2010: 7 2011: 9 2012: 10...

Zealand and the Bonds from Another Perspective 2/4/12

Great Report, Kevin! I think all of us had similar thoughts as you about this trip to some degree. Speaking for myself, I haven't done a hike that long since I was 25 years old, and never in winter! I just kept telling myself that it was a normal 12 mile hike with a 6 mile flat walk on each...
