    Mount Hale November 24th

It's been 2 or 3 years since I've done it, but it used to be relatively easy to follow, The hardest part was finding to the spot on the left were you scrambled up the bank above the river. After that, pretty straightforward. IIRC, some back-country skiers used to help keep the glades open.

Hypothermic Hikers Rescued in the Pemi

"Out here" - if you don't mind my asking, where are you located? I used to live in the Eastern Sierra of CA, also a dry climate. The relative humidity used to range from 7 to 15%.

Hypothermic Hikers Rescued in the Pemi

In my experience/observation I've rarely seen a teenager using poles in my 30-40 years of hiking.

Hypothermic Hikers Rescued in the Pemi

This is not a comment on this story of an 18 and 20 yo brother/sister who needed rescuing, but is a question on the use of poles - I wonder at what age people begin to see the advantages poles give you, and tend to start using them regularly? 40's? 50's? Older?

    2024: Leas snow than normal

These arguments serve no good purpose other than to get people pissed off at others. Nobody is going to have their opinion changed. Nobody. Couldn't agree with you more.

    Crampon Fit Issue

I also have a pair of Scarpa Inverno's and used them for several years, not only here in New England but also on Rainier and Mt Shasta and Adams. Once Cabela's started selling a boot they called Avalanche II I switched to them and the Scarpa's collect dust in the garage. Over the years I...

    Crampon Fit Issue

This might be a simple fix. The G12 has a connector bar. Take the crampon apart, and notice that the front has two slots thru which the bar is positioned. Take them apart, and place the bar thru the rear slot only, and then attach the heel piece. You will have created a noticeable hinge.

Everything's relative. I grew up in the 60's, a few miles from Northfield, and graduated from college in 1970.

Darn Tough is a relatively new brand. And not to get too afield - if people are searching for cold-weather gear, they should check out Canada's MEC. They only have a few stores, but they have a good catalog. They even have their own line of clothing. I think of them as the REI of Canada.

    Dachstein Wool Products

Many years ago I used to instruct for the NH AMC's Winter Hiking series, and being a Vermonter was a regular customer of Climb High who at the time was on Shelburne Rd, just south of Burlington on US7. I became friends with the fellow was ordered some of their clothing, and he explained to me...

    Owls Head Nov 17

The first time I did Owls Head was in June, 1997. A large group of us needed either Owls Head, the Bonds or both. The plan was for everyone to meet at Galehead Hut for the evening. I needed both, so I headed with a group of about 6 or 7 or 7 for Owls Head. None of us knew of any shortcuts...

    AMC sign Auction

I've often wondered if the NH USFS has ever considered having metal signs like some areas in the West? Am thinking especially of Mt Shasta. These signs are steel plates with laser-cut lettering. Quite attractive and more than capable of withstanding the battering of trekking poles unlike the...

    Owls Head Nov 17

I've only been on that section going over to 13 Falls once, and that was many years ago. Lots of minor ups and downs and nearly overgrown even then.
