    Jay Peak & Burke...

"Both the New Yorker and the Times pieces let Bill Stenger off the hook. He had a long history of breaking the law over the course of his tenure at Jay, and his claims of "“I’m outraged at what [Quiros] did and I feel abused,” are a load of b.s. Under Stenger's leadership, Jay Peak repeatedly...

Winter - Enjoy what is left of it

I drove once during a intense storm like this one. The state police for that storm required 4 wheel drive with winter tires, plus chains.

Winter - Enjoy what is left of it

Quite a difference in the Sierra - "A rare warning for “life-threatening blizzard conditions” is in effect for the mountains of the Sierra Nevada, including Lake Tahoe. The storm could bring at least three feet of snow, starting today." Justin Sullivan/Getty Images See the forecast...

I would call the Green Mtn FS office for that area and ask. Been my experience that the GMF is oriented towards hiking related activities, much more so that the Whites.

    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

These are the opening paragraphs of an AMC Appalachia article they wrote about Kate Matrosova. It's worth the read, even if it doesn't include the entire article. Too Cold: : The Death of Kate Matrosova

Ya Can't Make this Stuff Up!!

Good question, But if nobody's been charged in 45 years, chances are it won't happen soon. Does VT have more of a problem than other NE states, including NY?

    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

There are some areas in the Whites which are particularly snowy, and in my experience there's about a 1/2 mile section between Guyot and the spur to W. Bond that can have deep snows. But, given his substantial experience, he probably knew and planned for this.

NY hiker clung to tree above Adirondack cliff after sliding hundreds of feet

Thanks for posting that AMR interview. I've been on that section of trail. She's an example of bad things happening to experienced people. Very glad to read her account of what was largely a self rescue.

    Marty Engstom has passed away

This was my experience as well growing up in Pittsfield, except that we could also get a Channel 6 which was broadcast (IIRC) as an NBC affiliate.

    Marty Engstom has passed away

I enjoyed watching him as a kid growing up in the 50's and 60's. I also enjoyed it when his cat Fluffy walked across the set as only cats can do.

    San Gorgonio Mountain - December 3, 2023

I lived in San Bernardino when I was in the AF and stationed at Norton AFB, which has since closed. I taught my wife how to drive a stick shift (VW beetle) in the Orange groves in Redlands. If you're ever out that way again consider climbing Baldy (Mt San Gorgonio). It's a great dayhike. If...

For all those that hike with their dogs...

This is remarkable. I haven't read anything which says what elevation he was found at, but still. Anything about 8k' is considered high, at least for humans. I wonder what he found to eat and drink.
