Did you have hiking poles around your wrists, or GPS, altimeter watch, etc., nearby? Especially the GPS receiver.

Hiking Food Suggestions for Winter, Above Treeline

I prefer foods which go down easily with a minimum of water and with a maximum of calories and fast energy. Minimize stopping time to avoid chilling. Peanuts(oil + salt), granola bars (190 cal), chocolate bars (190 cal), and peanut M&Ms. Gorp and the like are not a bad choices at all. The...

    Bird and tree reference books

Audubon's Field Guide to North American Trees, Eastern Edition is excellent. Lots of pictures illustrating leaves, bark, even flowers. For birds, I hear them far more than I see them. A good CD of bird calls/songs is useful. They are even available as apps for smartphones, but you may need...

    Allen--or Frozen Niagara, 11/10

I was surprised at the trailhead that no one had signed-in for Allen on this beautiful fall Saturday. Nice to have it all to myself, I guess. I walked down to the Hudson in my wading shoes with my pantlegs rolled up and spent about 15 seconds of bliss in the cool, refreshing water. What a...

    Hantavirus at Uphill leanto

There is no way to know, of course, but he said 1) it was the only place he camped, 2) he was bit on the finger, presumably by a mouse in the night, 3) the incubation time was consistent with hantavirus, and 4) hantavirus was confirmed later by testing. He was treated at a major academic...

Getting to the White Mountains - Difficult This Winter

Are these the same people who bring us the dire hurricane forecasts each year, which haven't been materializing (except for Irene up here )?

Cannot get downloaded hike tracklog to display on NG TOPO map

Was it a matter of that little track log 'off' button at the top of the Tracks screen? I sometimes turn it off to make breaks in the track log files, or in time recording mode when stopping for a while, but don't remember to turn it on next time when I want it.

Cannot get downloaded hike tracklog to display on NG TOPO map

I'll email you a gpx file that I know loads on TOPO! on my machine. See if it works on yours. Go to Handhelds, Import, etc., to put it on a map.

    NY Trail Conditions postings?

Trail conditions postings are so . . . . . yesterday. Whatever happened to a sense of adventure and going out into the unknown? Do we have to know the outcome before we begin the hike?

    Santanoni distances?

15.4 miles in loop (using Santanoni trail and Bradley Pond trail, up or down), i.e., no out and back to Santanoni from TS. Total ascent = 5000 feet. Times Sq. to Couchie is 1.5 miles

    Single-season Northeast 111 Finish, 6/19 to 9/9/2012

On Saturday we are going to continue fixing up the notorious and neglected Bradley Pond trail with some log and board bridging. In June we rerouted about 1/2 mile of trail up near the lean-to where the Panther Brook herdpath begins. Talk about job security, this trail is it. We'll never run...

    Single-season Northeast 111 Finish, 6/19 to 9/9/2012

Thanks, TEO. Yeah, I was less than 24 hours early. You're the type to nail me for it . . . I was all ready, it was a nice day, and the Santanonis were waiting. Guilty as charged, but I'm appealing all they way to the Supreme Court. I bet you are also reporting me to USADA for drug testing...

    Single-season Northeast 111 Finish, 6/19 to 9/9/2012

You're right, Eddie, I did a lot of work on the groupings of mountains for each day hike, considering the miles, ascent, and even driving time between trailheads. I am attaching a PDF showing the Whites groupings as an example. I kept days in the range of 17-25 miles and 5000-9000 feet ascent...

    Single-season Northeast 111 Finish, 6/19 to 9/9/2012

This is more correctly a ‘journey report’ but I couldn’t find a forum with that name. After enjoying a full winter season of hiking, I thought a repeat of the NE111 (mountains over 4000 feet; actually 115 mountains due to some later additions) would be a good goal for the summer. To make it...
