You mean you're switching from beer to olive oil as a beverage? Or are you maintaining beer is vegan again?
I had an Indian friend, vegetarian all his life, who had a big problem with cholesterol and also was intolerant of statins.
Thanks, Cath. Looking at your own impressive list of accomplishments, you need to visit the Adirondacks some time. I'm sure you can handle the challenge! :)
Sabrina, you are right about the driving--the good weather was an important factor in getting to NH. Actually, it was only five trips.
As an "old Dude", I wear the appellation with pride. As I said in the ADK 46W thread:
My real message for readers is that no matter who you are, what is your...
On March 8 I climbed Galehead and South Twin from Gale River Rd to finish a single- season winter round of the White Mountain 4000 footers. I started hiking on Jan. 25 with Owl’s Head and East Osceola/Osceola. I will be posting a list of the days/mountains with www.48in1winter.com so I won’t go...
You must be the person who kindly gave me excellent trail conditions advice in the PA as I was arriving around 12:30. Thanks--you were right on! :)
In the afternoon the snow was wet and temperature was warmer, and I had no problem with sticking and balling. It was a beautiful day up there...
For several years of active winter hiking I have used Merrell winter boots (the names and designs tend to change each year, my newest pair is similar to the Isotherm 8's). Most of them have a rubber bottom and a leather/synthetic top, and include insulation (Thinsulate or Primoloft, etc.), and...
Adam, just to be on the safe side, I think you should wait till next year.
Don't worry about it, just bring your poles, Microspikes, crampons, and ice axe and you'll be fine. There was 2-3" of new snow last night, and now it is really cold. Perfect!
The road is usually plowed and/or packed by snowmobile, so it is easy walking, maybe need Microspikes but not snowshoes. You'll just get nice and warmed up and you'll be at the trailhead. Won't even notice it, except a little bit on the way out.
The trail from the Connery Pond trailhead was in great shape with about 1" of snow up to the WF lean-to. Above there, Microspikes were needed for the various ice patches and rock-covered ice. I carried axe and crampons but never encountered conditions requiring them. Snow increased around the...
From Average Heart Rate
Most heart rate monitors calculate calories burned and I wondered how they do it. Here is a LINK to the livestrong site (also found the same equation on other sites) which uses your average heart rate during exercise with gender, age, weight, and time to get a calorie...
At moderate water levels, you don't need to wade at the Opalescent crossing, if you are proficient at rock-hopping. Maybe 100 yards beyond the marked crossing point, the old path to the former bridge angles right. After a few feet, go to the river bank and you will see a nice route of high...
I have seen their "restoration" on several brooks. They drive an excavator or bulldozer into the stream, then move the larger rocks to the sides to form walls, leaving the center a clear and fast-running channel. I expect this was necessary and prudent in some cases with extensive damage and...
I was out there this week. Coreys road to the trailhead is in great shape for any vehicle.
The marked trail to the Calkins Brook herdpath is 3.3 miles of easy walking with moderate slopes. From there to Donaldson is 2.7 miles (2100 ft ascent) on a steady uphill with a few steep spots. The...
