    pemi backcountry camping

What about between S Twin and N Twin? Still no water but I do seem to remember some decent open woods in there.

Wildcat Ski Trails closed until further notice

Ah, found it on the Wildcat site, thanks! http://www.skiwildcat.com/whats-happening.html?id=5578

Wildcat Ski Trails closed until further notice

Well, gosh, they didn't say detail that in their Forest Alerts. :) Where are you quoting that from?

Wildcat Ski Trails closed until further notice

Per order of the WMNF Forest Supervisor, the Wildcat Ski Area ski trails are closed to the public until further notice. I assume this has to do with the demolition work that was done last fall up on the summit, but that's really just a guess. In the past when this has happened there has not been...

Car camping in the Whites, suggestions please.

They're starting to open but the USFS WMNF website (when it was working the other day) said to call as they're opening on an individual basis as they become ready, not all at once or on a specific schedule.

    WMNF Forest Road Status

Haha I did almost exactly the same thing today, having not seen your post, and the conditions are the same except I didn't go up to Ammo parking to check that. I felt that for approaching Edmands Path going via Base Road and coming south on Mt. Clinton would be better conditions, there were some...

    New Home Page Photo?

A 360° panorama wouldn't have to be as wide, it would tile seamlessly if done right.

    Hiker rescued on Bondcliff

I don't think an official is ever going to officially recommend random (no offense) websites on the Internet, for legal liability purposes. It makes total sense to me that they would only reference the Obs, AMC, and "local weather stations."

    New Home Page Photo?

I think we need a wider photo, the current one isn't as wide as my browser and looks icky as it tiles.

Black Fly Schedule in the Whites

Memorial Day two years ago I got eaten alive by relentless swarms on the Moats, though friends on various other peaks reported bug-free conditions, so I'd say that considering them to be *somewhere* by Mem Day weekend as the start is probably a good idea.

is it okay to sleep in your car at a trailhead?

Appalachia isn't a USFS lot? I shudder to think how much poop is in the woods around places like that. People who are sleeping there to get an early start aren't then driving into town for their morning ablutions, I would think.

    Guns on the trail

When I see a hiker with a handgun, and I have, I think, as others here have stated, "What are they so afraid of?" Then I worry that I'm going to get shot popping out of the woods back onto the trail after taking a pee. Brandishing a gun is like brandishing a baseball bat around. It makes you...

    Franconia Ridge Knife Injury

When I originally saw the press release yesterday, I wrote F&G and politely expressed my disappointment that nothing was mentioned about the inappropriateness of that "evergreen bough cutting" and how the media and readers could see it as condoning that aspect of the behavior.

    DSLR Lens preference?

If I'm specifically doing a photography hike then I'll have the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L, the 100mm f/2.8L macro if I think there will be photos/closeups, and my 6mm fisheye for landscapes way up high. For a special event like Flags on the 48 I'll bring the 70-200mm f/2.8L in case there's a flyby. :)...

    Camera Suggestions

I used to use a Canon point-and-shoot, various models throughout the years, complementing my Canon dSLR's; however, I've been thrilled with my Nikon AW110. This is their waterproof, cold-and-shock resistant offering, and while Nikon's menus and interface are mind-boggling (especially compared to...

Owl's 2/16/2014 looking good until the trail up!!

The Brutus starts in a southeasterly direction, then you hit a small drainage/ravine, go up it a ways, then turn extremely steep north out of the drainage. You might have been on it.
