Most Difficult New England Winter 4kers

After fresh snow it's very easy to get lost on the Willey Ridge Trail between the A-Z junction and Field, and between Field and Willey. There are numerous sections where the trees are somewhat open and sparse, thus there is no clear corridor to follow, and no blazes. There are also a few spots...

footwear for the Osceolas next Sunday

No problems on the chimney bypass. A mix of rock and blue ice but easy up and down (with appropriate traction).

    Kahtoola versus Hillsounds

The Trail Crampon PRO rocked my world yesterday on solid rippled ice on the Osceolas yesterday. Microspikes were not adequate and I suspect the Trail Crampon would not have fared any better. A rigid frame pushing longer rigid spikes into the ice was absolutely required. Pet peeve: condition...

footwear for the Osceolas next Sunday

We did the Osceolas yesterday and you need something more than microspikes. Giant rippled blue ice flows encompass the trail in a number of locations, some steep, and also the open stretch of slide. Microspikes are not adequate for this kind of ice, they just don't have enough grip. The...

    Zealand Road

I believe Wild River Road was updated already this November because at some point it was closed, a poster here found the gate on Rte 113 closed, then it reopened. I don't see much snow on the ground down the street on the Bretton Woods cam so unless there's a lot of ice, I imagine the road has...

Winter Gathering NH Barnes Field February 21-23

I have a trip to Jay Peak booked that weekend. It's too bad, I have fond memories of those gatherings and would definitely have taken part if not for the conflict. I hope a lot of people go and you all have a great time!!!

Is Mill Brook Road still open

In November of 2011 the trailhead was very clearly marked with a sign and kiosk:

Winter car camping campsites in NH and VT?

Barnes in the winter is first-come-first-served, no reservations, therefore from the perspective of the reservation management agency it's "closed."

Is Mill Brook Road still open

The last time I was up there I couldn't even *find* the gates that used to be mentioned in the WMG (and closed most of the year). It's an excellent hike in from that side, one of my favorites.

Winter car camping campsites in NH and VT?

If I remember right, one interesting thing about Barnes is that in the summer you pay by the head, but in the winter you pay a flat rate for the site, or something like that?

Giving way on the trail with snowshoes

Hey, I'm not advocating for rules here. I'm simply saying that if you're being an inconsiderate ass by postholing and mangling the trail, then suck it up if someone calls you on it and tells you you're being an inconsiderate ass. Don't post whining about it. (and yes, I realize the OP wasn't...

    WMNF Forest Road Status

It is almost certainly gated at both ends; however, the southern "end" is just north of the Baldface Circle Trail / Cold River Camp area.

Giving way on the trail with snowshoes

PS - I always welcome a breather break on my ascents, but generally I just watch the oncoming traffic (in either direction) and if they don't step off, I will. No biggie.

Giving way on the trail with snowshoes

On the last weekend of winter last year I did Whiteface and Passaconaway. Based on the conditions I'd read about from people who'd just been up there, plus the weather forecast, I wore only microspikes and left the snowshoes in the car. As you might expect, there was well over 3-4' of snow on...

Giving way on the trail with snowshoes

There's a rule not in VT but in the Adirondacks in NY that snowshoes MUST be worn with 2' or more of snow on the ground.

Wildcat Winter Rules - Background and Discussion

I would imagine the answer is yes. It's not like a helicopter, it doesn't really take much to bundle you into a sled and slide you down. I think that despite the 4K Committee's refusal to take a stand on sledding, that the peak should not count if you're completely incapacitated on the way down...

    Backcountry xc-ski in n-east

I have a Karhu Pyxis with 3-pin bindings + cable which while I personally have yet to use them in Baxter, were described to me by a season Baxter veteran as the perfect Baxter ski. Control, width, edges, and heel lifters for the climb from Roaring Brook up to Chimney Pond (which needs a sturdier...
