Wildcat Winter Rules - Background and Discussion

Saddleback still welcomes hikers (aka “uphill access”) but there are restrictions and you do have to get a (free) pass to do so. See their website for the complete list. Here are some highlights: You must have a complimentary pass, obtained at the ticket office during operational hours. Access...

Save the date: Pat and Audrey's potluck November 2

I plan to bring a blueberry pie and an apple pie. Hopefully there will be some appetites??? ;)

    Best approach to Breadloaf/Jackson

The Skylight Pond approach is very straightforward. The shelter is neat to visit, the pond pretty. There's a hairpin turn once you're up on the LT, and if you go straight off the hairpin it dead-ends after several hundred yards at a fine viewpoint looking west across VT to NY. I don't remember...

    AMC Zealand hut hydropower permit

I always thought that it was the coolest thing, to be pumping water by using mechanical water power. It made me sad to see the pump replaced, though it's a heck of a lot quieter. Zealand Hut is definitely in a great site for eco-friendly electric power, between the wind turbine, solar cells, and...

    Government shutdown...

The AMC's influence might help keep Gale River and Zealand Roads open if the Forest Services decides to start gating, about that I would not complain.

    Wild River Wilderness

Having just been on the Baldfaces, Royces, and Mt Meader, I'm going to recommend that wherever you camp in the Wild River Valley, you take the middle day and do a day hike up to that ridge.

    Whitewall Mtn. on October 10th

Isn't that what the 3000-footer bushwhackers call West Field?

    Cabot Parking

As of at least November 2011 the gate was actually gone (I didn't even see it) and you could drive to the trailhead.

    Ride from Crawford to Pinkham

It may cost a lot since it's well outside their area, especially if you're just one person, but The Shuttle Connection in Lincoln would probably do it. Give them a call. They have a Facebook page at http://m.facebook.com/theshuttleconnection

    Mendon-Killington

The classic route is the loop you describe. Up the old carriage road, whack from the third cairn (might not still be the third but it's where you take the last turn and level out), then come back, follow as described, end up near Cooper Lodge. Summit then take Bucklin Trail right back down to...

Highwater Trail vs. Wild River Trail

The bridge up at the start is being replaced, I think I posted elsewhere here about it. After a storm the Wild River area is indeed wild. I concur about the Cypress Brook crossing being as bad as the Wild itself, meaning that with Spider Bridge gone you can indeed get stuck in there.

Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites

That's distressing. That's my favorite place to get subs. $6 or so buys plenty of tasty cheesesteak or chicken parm. I heard about a year ago that they'd changed ownership, that the new owner wanted to expand to include a Maia Papaya (*awesome* Bethlehem coffee shop) type environment, but since...
