6 Tufts Students Rescued From Dry River

Well, that's just silly putting those guidelines in a different part of the Forest Plan from all the other Wilderness guidelines in the appendix.

6 Tufts Students Rescued From Dry River

The 2005 (and revised on a rolling basis, for example the Wild River Wilderness was added to it) Forest Plan: http://www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/whitemountain/landmanagement/planning/?cid=STELPRDB5199941&width=full "Trail Fundamentals and Trail Management Objectives" which references FSH 2309.18...

6 Tufts Students Rescued From Dry River

I do not believe this is in accordance with their own approved Forest Plan. Those trails from their north ends into the Wilderness are classified as Zone C, areas within 500' of moderately-used trails. In particular: "Trails and associated structures are consistent with WMNF Level 2 trail...

6 Tufts Students Rescued From Dry River

Well, that sounds like my guess has a good chance of being right: confusing the Dry River Cutoff for the Mizpah Cutoff.

Emergency Shelter Room at Lake of the Clouds Hut

I don't know, do you think that blog really meant the Dungeon? Maybe it was a necessary reaction to that Seattle Backpackers Magazine article here

FYI Lafayette Place parking south bound side

The south lot and access road have been no parking for quite a few winters now. I think people are just getting stupider and bigger signs needed to keep people from driving on the groomer-packed snowmobile route along the driveway, turning into a "parking space," and sinking into 4' of snow.

Beginning winter hiking - which trails to start out on?

One big win that you get on the north side, however, is the side spur to the open ledges above the Cliffs. While lower than the summit, you are much closer to Franconia Ridge. It's directly in front of you, on a clear day it's like you could reach out and touch it.

    Google Maps jumping the gun?

Right now, looking at Maine in Google Maps, they have I-6 shown across the state. The eastern end is just south of Spednic Lake on Old Codyfield Road, and then it traverses through Lincoln, Dover-Foxcroft, Monson, across 15/Long Pond Road, and back out of the country on 201. Check it out

Beginning winter hiking - which trails to start out on?

Avalon Trail to A-Z Trail to Mt Tom is a great beginner snowshoe hike to a 4K summit. Lonesome Lake Trail to Lonesome Lake Hut is a great beginner snowshoe hike just up into the woods and with the shelter of the hut as a destination. Really good for initially learning about heat management...

    Mt Abraham (ME) Road Access

I know the double bridge on Rapid Stream Road has not been replaced, so while I can't say how far up the plowing goes, you have to make that crossing and if not fully frozen over (if it even does fully freeze over) it isn't a pretty one. A common winter approach is by hiking or xc skiing up...

Wildcat Winter Rules - Background and Discussion

While I don't know of any ski area that allows sledding (as opposed to controlled tubing in dedicated runs), I'd guess they snuck up at night because of the full moon.

Preparation for a Winter Trip in Baxter

You still need to have reservations, your first night must be at RB, then you are allowed to go to CP the next day. You're allowed to go all the way out at the end if you want (though you say you don't). So your hardest part ahead of time is going to be getting the facility reservations. After...

I disagree. Jay Peak's ice rink and water park are far more Disney-ish than anything at Sugarloaf.

    Saddleback for sale...

Holding back those other 7,600 acres is what's going to keep someone from buying into in the ski area's 400. Limiting expansion and revenue possibilities doesn't make the ski area an attractive investment. Here's a more thorough article...

NH Proposes Fee If People Need To Be Rescued

Cypress is a ski area and he went out-of-bounds. He claims that he missed the fences/ropes/signs, but also admits to being highly distracted due to learning some personally tragic news. Being a customer of a ski area and leaving the area boundaries is, to me, a different situation than hiking in...
