"Invisible Helmet" is air bag for your head: biking, skiing, climbing...

While I appreciate the concept the article indicates a helmet is often not worn because it's heavy and hot. I don't see this thing as light and cool. Most folks I know who choose to go without a helmet choose not to because they see it as not cool (the other cool) or not needed because they're...

    energy bars

It's cold when I hike so I stay away from the bars that get like a rock and stick to those that are more of the "packed grain" variety so I can keep my teeth. Another option is the "Power Bar Energy Bites". It's a reclosable bag of 8 or so bite-sized power bars. Even if they freeze you can...

Article about the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps)

Dad was in the CCC in Meeker, CO. We got to visit the area with him in the mid 70s and it was amazing to see the things they did. Mostly by hand.

merrell perimeter gore tex vs. ll bean gore tex cresta

Many years and miles on the Crestas and I still like them. And with the guarantee you're pretty well set if they don't work for you . No matter how much you beat them.

Would a "summer pulke" be anti-LNT?

...and that about sums is up. Kinda tough to hike anything of substance in the Whites without hitting WMNF. I understand see the "all or nothing" rule to cover those situations where someone would say "but you didn't say I couldn't use.....". So is a sled isn't considered a form of winter...

Would a "summer pulke" be anti-LNT?

This is the concept. But a bigger wheel for an easier run.

Would a "summer pulke" be anti-LNT?

An honest question. Requesting answers you've thought about. I had my first experience hiking with a sled this winter and found it quite enjoyable. No beat up hips. A little more room for gear. Lots of good. I was thinking it would be nice to come up with something that would work in...

Ever wonder what a hike looks from the perspective of 4 legged hiking companion ?

Hike on all four. Hmm. Might be the view of a few who chose to hike January 1 in spite of a bit too much celebration???

    Walking Music

My first post on this thread. Listen to the intoduction of the song and plant your left foot on the beat. Run. Quick paced hike. Works. For me, anyway, since the mid 70s.

    Walking Music

It's rarely the last song. Usually one of a set of songs that are always there. Not a bad thing....

    Walking Music

One doesn't have to have a music player to listen to music. I "play" music in my head all the time while walking, hiking, biking or just about any activity. Just think about the song and it appears. Maybe a variation of voices in my head but it works for me... :D

We all have opinions or thoughts. Seems, though, that some can't be stated without being questioned. :(

    QR Codes on the Trail

Encouraging "Distracted Hiking"? Having these things on the signs might encourage cell phone carriers to improve coverage - a benefit for those who need help for some reason. But then again better coverage might turn the fountain into a steam crossing.

    Walking Music

Benny and the Jets. Elton John. Every other step is a beat. Worked running track in high school when it was on the radio all the time. Works now. No player needed. It just sticks in my head...

    Nice Fleece Gloves

Don't know that I've ever been able to say this before but I put full year on a pair of simple Windstopper fleece gloves and they're like the day I bought them. Outdoor Research "Gripper Glove". Any time I've had a pair of fleece gloves with that plastic stuff to make them "wear better" the...
