    $10 Micro-spikes knockoffs?!?!?

Is the $ savings from buying three pair worth the weight of having to carry them all as spares?

    Appreciating gear on Fishin' Jimmy

I saw the sign for that Kevin and thought it might be worth a look. Another option I've used from "this side" is Cascade Brook to Kinsman Pond trail. It was a bunch of years ago but I remember following moose tracks up a pretty smooth path. Though there are signs on Lonesome Lake trail that...

Oddball Question Re Frost on Windshield

I live in Maine. One car points east. One west. Neither gets frosty. They're in an unheated garage. ...oh. And I keep my snowshoes USED FOR HIKING in the garage too. They don't frost up either.

Kinsmans via Lonseome Lake, Fishin' Jimmy, Kinsman Ridge - 1/5/12

Date of Hike: January 5, 2012 Trail Conditions: A few inches as you work up Lonesome Lake trail up gradually increasing to 6" or so on Kinsman Ridge. All is well packed. Plenty of ice flows on Fishin' Jimmy and on a few sections of Kinsman Ridge. Special Equipment Required: I used...

    Appreciating gear on Fishin' Jimmy

I've been following it it's hard to justify that one more piece of gear when your daughter is filling out college applications. :D

    Appreciating gear on Fishin' Jimmy

It’s been a while since I was in the Kinsman/Cannon area. The thing I remembered most was the mix of pines and birches and how they make the area seem very open and airy while still being quite well grown in. I spent a day hiking up to North and South Kinsman via the Lonesome Lake...

    Gaiters for New England

Another fan of the OR. And mine came with a spare pair of straps I've carried in my pack for years and never needed. I guess they're neoprene (black rubbery material over fabric). The straps hold up quite well though I only wear the tall gaiters when there's a good amount of snow. Lowers on...

Fishin' Jimmy to Kinsmans - 1/5 or 1/6

Heading over to the Franconia area for a couple days (Thursday and Friday) with a plan to make my way up Fishin' Jimmy to the Kinsmans one day and something else (maybe Cannon) the other. Fishin' Jimmy should be plenty icy but I expect some nice picture opportunities. PM if any interest in...

    Overnight Parking Near Lily Pond?

It's short to the crossing but 2 hours from the house. I've done the walk down from the pond in winter for a day hike and it worked quite well. The last time I was there the river was quite frozen but there was still a bit of hopping and creaking as we crossed. I haven't been there yet this...

    Overnight Parking Near Lily Pond?

Thanks for that note. Did a search and found a report from "Wild Mountain Wanderers" that includes a few pictures. Looks like it's in one piece but a bit displaced... http://www.wildmountainwanderers.com/2011/11/upper-nanamocomuck-ski-trail-sawyer.html

    Bog Bridges?

I agree on the concerns with attaching wire mesh for traction. I'd expect it to become a bit of a hazard when (not if) it gets torn up from crampons and such. A slipping hazard preventer becomes a tripping hazard. The sharp wire ends would also be a bit of a problem for dogs or other animals'...

    Overnight Parking Near Lily Pond?

Thanks Chris. Saw the pull-offs on Goggle Maps (amazing) but had concerns of parking there overnight if we get any snow. A little concerned about returning to a plowed in car.. :( Hoping for a true lot but can't really think of one close by.

    Overnight Parking Near Lily Pond?

Looking at an overnight hike out Sawyer River way from the Kanc and plan to start out near Lilly Pond to avoid the Swift River crossing. Is there somewhere to park a car overnight (off the road) near there? Google maps shows a pull-off but no real parking area and who knows what shape it would...

    Retiring to Maine?

Did it. No regrets. Mid-coast. Not retirement but telework is the next best thing. I had the option to live anywhere in the northeast 4 years ago. Could not be happier with my choice. I live in Freeport. Home of LL Bean and thousands of tourists year round and you'd never know it. A well...

Hancock Notch Trail / Trail Head ?

Sports cars. Motorcycles. THey have nothing on the box trucks that drive it daily as part of their delivery run. Got tailgated all the way to the top by one the other day. Pulled off at the summit to let him by so he wouldn't be all over me on the way down.

Hancock Notch Trail / Trail Head ?

Hmm. The lot for this trailhead wasn't plowed today. A few cars and trucks were there but they plowed themselves in. Greely Pond lot was plowed.
