Lincoln Woods, Wilderness and a bit of Bondclifff Trails (No peaks)

Date of Hike: Nov 25, 2011 Trail Conditions: Lincoln Woods was no surprise with a few inches of trampled snow - a little less packed as you approached the falls. Once on Wilderness is was just a bare booter and me in 6-8" of powder mixed with areas of damp but not overly slushy snow...

Would You Buy a SAR Card?

Interesting. Similar question, though less specific, a year and a half ago. 51% would buy a form of insurance. 11% said current system is fine. 11 % thought Fed or state should cover.

The latest GPS thhread - Garmin or Delorme

I'm about to get a serious discount at LL Bean (holiday help) and am considering upgrading to a "real" GPS from my old eTrex. Looking at either the DeLorme® Earthmate PN-60 GPS with Topo North America 9.0 or the Garmin Oregon 450t. Things for me to consider are pretty simple: 90% of my...

    MSR Fuel Bottle Collar

Had the stove for a number of years. Never a problem. Only down side is the o-ring kit has way too many parts that really don't wear. I think think there's a thread somewhere on that...

    MSR Fuel Bottle Collar

There's almost no weight to it and no need for metal. It just doesn't get hot that far from the flame. At least on this stove).

    MSR Fuel Bottle Collar

Thermodoesn'tmatter ;) Well whatever kind of plastic it is it doesn't get hot enough to change. I brought water to a full boil and let it cook for a while. Held onto the plastic with bare fingers. Not even warm. <You can't see in the picture but it's boiling away. Note the drops of water...

New Hampshire Fish and Game Search and Rescue Funding Hearing

Note my earlier statement... As for the details of MAYDAY, PAN PAN, 911, etc the point is the authority is contacted and they respond. In the two instances I had direct communication with CG I contacted them on ch 16. We discussed the situation. In once instance they retrieved an injured...

New Hampshire Fish and Game Search and Rescue Funding Hearing

And 911 when used by lost hikers/tourists often indicates a fear of death because of their situation. In both instances they are seeking assistance from authorities in place to assist them in an emergency. In both cases intentional misuse can lead to punishment in some form. In both cases...

...and speaking of no free lunch there really isn't one and things need to be paid for. I'd rather not see my taxes go up anymore and, even if they did, there's a pretty small likelihood that any tax funds targeted for SAR would actually make it there so I'd pay for an annual "Hiking license"...

Or in some instances if things go bad in bad weather and you have the ability to communicate they may tell you to stick it out because it's unsafe for them to get too close (BDDT). But they'll have communication with the party and will act based upon that conversation. If they simply get word...

New Hampshire Fish and Game Search and Rescue Funding Hearing

SAR on the (salt) water is called Coast Guard. I can't recall of a bill being sent by them - no matter the lack of experience or common sense of the boater. This is the case no matter the state or distance from shore (within the 200 mile limit). What's the real difference between being lost...

New Hampshire Fish and Game Search and Rescue Funding Hearing

Personal responsibility is gone. Opened a phone book lately? Both covers and the first 50 pages are ads for attorneys offering to represent you if you slipped on a wet floor or got in a car accident that might, if you look at it from the right angle, not be your fault. No one is responsible...

    MSR Fuel Bottle Collar

No I haven't Chip. But I thought of adding "heat shield removed for clarity" to the pictures. I normally use an aluminum wind shield with the stove that would keep the plastic at least 6" from the stove and add a bit of a heat shield. It might soften but I'm doubting it. I'll let you know...

    MSR Fuel Bottle Collar

I store my Whisperlight stove and accessories in the black bag that came with it and have to bend the hose on the pump in a "U" to make it fit. Because it likes to stay that way I have to prop up the top of the fuel bottle to keep the stove from tilting when connected. For years I've I gone...

    Polyester Pollution

Do you run the water non-stop when shaving or brushing your teeth? Less water used means less processed by sewage plants.
