    Polyester Pollution

In the traditional septic/leach system - you might get away with that. Many newer systems in coastal or high clay areas are a bit more complicated and involve pumps and filters. Even non-synthetic items can mess it up. A hundred dollars every few years beats a $20K replacement.

    Polyester Pollution

...and the alternative? Wool for all? Fiberglass? Better filtration at the sewage processing plant? Does the residue work into the leach field of my septic system and stay there or is removed with the solid waste when my tank is pumped every few years and taken to a facility? How does...

Concerning NH 4000 footer peak bagging

..or maybe the hiker didn't really care if it "counted" and simply wanted to get past the road walk quickly so they could take a nice walk in the woods.

Has anyone tried the LL Bean Ascent?

Thanks Ellen. I picked one up but it's lighter than the one on the site (walked across the street after I bought it and compared). And it retails for "only" $299. Maybe last year's model? Got it for $159 at the outlet but it still has the guarantee so I figure it's worth a try. A few rain...

Outdoor Research - Rocky Mt low gaiters - product review

I went to the Bean site to check out of curiosity on a version I saw the other day (BugOut - they're tan, not black and have insect repellent in the fabric). I often check the reviews and came upon the following. I'm sure glad I hike around here - else I'd have to sue Mother Nature for the...

Has anyone tried the LL Bean Ascent?

I'm looking at replacing my old EMS immitation GoreTex rain shell. The Bean outlet has quite a few of their GoreTex Ascent for $199 (maybe less?). Black only. It looks pretty good but I find minimal write-ups. http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/70911?feat=593-GN1 Has anyone got any experience...

    Winter camping in New Hampshire

Agreed. A snow shovel is handy if you're expecting snow cover. And there's usually camp wood down at the gas station on town. Not cheap but you can't bring it in from Mass.

    Winter camping in New Hampshire

Can't speak for those listed but have winter camped at Hancock (on the Kanc just west of Lincoln Woods) many times. It's open year round. No water but there's a stream and at least one set of pit toilets are open. It's also only a short distance to Lincoln Woods for heated bathrooms. They...

    Kombucha

I've just always been a fan of eating a balanced diet without over eating and getting plenty of exercise. Maybe all those fancy whole this and natural that helps any more than plain old fruits, veggies, grains, starches and a mix of various meats but I'll stay with the simplicity. Dad died of...

Good Rainy Day NH 4k'er Hike?

Why not Cannon? I've done Cannon via Hi Cannon in a rain/snow mix and rather enjoyed it. There a few "fun" spots but I found the cover made for a nice walk.

    Attaching snowshoes to daypacks

A little OT but I've found that a Z-rest fits nicely in the nylon bag from an old Thermarest. Adds only a few ounces but it stays much cleaner/drier and doesn't get beat up.
