Personal experiences with emergency locator devices

Brambor - I'm pretty sure you can pay annually for the SPOT

Personal experiences with emergency locator devices

Happy with my SPOT for all the reasons Joe mentions above. Also like that during longer hiking hiatus you can deactivate service and save $$$, then re-activate. Location plans start at 14.99 month https://www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=103

Hiker dies on Bondcliff Christmas Eve

I've done the Bonds/Zealand (Or Zealand/Bonds) traverse four times in winter/winter conditions and always find it less about mileage for a fit hiker(even with Zealand Rd closed) the bulk of the hiking is easy, relatively low overall elevation gain, but the open ridge between Bond and Bondcliff...

Hiker dies on Bondcliff Christmas Eve

The year I nearly finished the W48 I was turned back four times at Bondcliff.....and had to wait until the next winter to finish up. Prayers to his family, so sad - hoping he didn't suffer very long up there :-(

GPS Dog Trackers -- does anyone have any experience with them??

I'd still want a tracking system for her. The point is not to keep her off leash and just "find her". The point is to have a tracking system on her in case she became lost. I think you know my dogs are well trained :-). I'm thinking of the Spaniel Safety Factor here, god forbid we ever need...

I'd LOVE one...

    Maine/NH Road Status

I was going to suggest this route as IMHO its the finest approach to GE but may not be well broken out and there are some twists near the scrub line that could be tough to navigate if you haven't been there before.

GPS Dog Trackers -- does anyone have any experience with them??

Good advice - thanks so much!!!! I've looked at Garmins, but I am only interested in a tracking device that is smartphone/bluetooth enabled, don't want an electronic training collar and garmin seems to combine the two. (although their range is impressive!!)

I'm considering getting a GPS tracker for my little Spaniel -- does anyone have any experience with them (and if so, this model in particular?) Thanks in advance for any feedback! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PDPGUK6?psc=1

    Saying goodbye to an old friend...Terra T Traildog Oct 13 2003-November 15 2016

A little late posting this, its been a rough month. We found out last July that our dear friend and best hiking companion, Terra, had a brain tumor. At age 13, we decided rather than try to medically intervene in what was a 3-6 month prognosis, that we would instead spend the time doing things...

Plastic bags with dog droppings left at trailheads?

It is ironic. Many of the bags sold nowadays for dog poop are biodegradable, thankfully.

Plastic bags with dog droppings left at trailheads?

YUP! And when your dog eats the poop of a medicated individual, and requires a long emergency carry out due to toxicity, its EVEN LESS FUN.

Portable Battery Packs / Solar Charging

I use an Anker E7 powerbank and get 5-7 charges for an Iphone/Ipad. I keep a charged one in my camper and use it to top off at night, as well as running a small USB fan. I've gotten 8 days camping with it before it was depleted. I also have a Zero Lemon which gives about 2-3 Iphone...

Plastic bags with dog droppings left at trailheads?

I've seen people leave them on their way in (dog gets out of car and poops) tie them off and leave them at the trailhead (this being at local conservation lands that don't have a public trash can), then pick them up on their way out. I don't like that either, I usually toss mine on my car...

Will you go gentle into that good hiking night

Yes, but because my oldest and dearest hiking partner can no longer take long walks, we have been exploring and enjoying hiking and time together in flatter, gentler lands.
