    Winter Conditions this weekend

Thunder snow in Randolph Friday AM. Rt 2 was a full on white out at 5:30 AM in Jefferson/Randolph when I left. Appalachia stayed pretty deserted. Garfield was breezy on top and plenty cold but we were out by 1 PM.

A new low for the WMNF storm response

Hi All, Anyone have the latest info on the Gale River Loop Road? I'm assuming it's closed and can't find any recent updates. My original plan to do Adams tomorrow is off the table at this point! Thanks!

Possible Admission Fee increase at some National Parks

I'm in the same place on this, although I find it disturbing that public lands are increasingly harder to access for people without disposable cash. New higher fees cut off an increasing number of citizens from access. $30-40 more here and there won't bother me personally, but like many of us...

    Wow - Black Pond "Bushwhack"

Yeah, it's the slide that's the bushwhack if you follow maintained trails to the start. It's easier to follow than some actual maintained trails. For those who haven't done it, it's not really one to brag about your "route finding skills" after finishing. Pretty straight forward.

Castellated Ridge. White and slick. Then Mad-Adams.

One of the wildest, most rugged ridges in the White Mountains. Incredible. Bet it's got a tough crossing at the start right now.

    New Book on Kate M.

It seems to me people toss around the terms 'Spot' and 'PLB' fairly generically. It's too bad she didn't replace some of those electronics with a sleeping bag. Read the book if you haven't. Good detail.

    New Book on Kate M.

Based on the presentation I saw, I think the author was first fascinated by the story. Second, he has a unique position as a risk assessment specialist, and third saw a lot of people waiting to know the story and its details. I found it authentic and compassionately and respectfully done.

    Hard snow on the summits

I drove around the Northern Pressies this afternoon and was happy to see that white. Lafayette had a bit too. Traction tomorrow.

That time of year to dress in fashionable Orange

Be real careful on opening and closing day of rifle season for deer. When living in NYS, I would routinely see 10+ deer in my front yard. They were more common than people in Steuben County. Since living in NH, I've probably seen three moose for every deer....not many deer over the years.

What Winter Fleece Jackets Should I Consider?

I've taken a shot on the Monkey Man. It's the most like the one I've used for 10 years, a 200 weight fleece full zip. I imagine this will feel similar, likely warmer since new. I opted against the wind block, appreciate everyone's comments on that. It would likely be too hot for hiking. I have...

Winter Arrives This Weekend Above Treeline (Pack for it)

It's occasionally an unexpected third day for those caught by surprise on Saturday and Sunday. The weather forecasts from a few days ago had rough weather beginning Sunday. As it stood yesterday, Sunday evening was the start of it. It's simply a basic reminder that winter starts sooner on the...

    Poison Ivy Video

For extreme itch, I find peppermint oil (pure essential oil) works great. I used Benadryl cream for awhile which gave me relief more than most but peppermint oil removed the itch. 5-10 drops rubbed into the spot. $5 a bottle. Smells pretty nice too. YMMV

Winter Arrives This Weekend Above Treeline (Pack for it)

It won't be full on ground winter conditions yet, but Monday is predicted to drop to 17F with winds gusting over 100. Some snow, rime ice, bitter wind chills. Cold enough on the high summits. Yesterday was gorgeous on Madison. I wouldn't want to get caught up there prepared or unprepared over...

Winter Arrives This Weekend Above Treeline (Pack for it)

Full on winter conditions above treeline Sunday with potential 100 mph winds coming. It's that time of year that fools even experienced hikers. Take care. Good time to think about winter pack contents, emergency bivy gear, goggles for up high, and other considerations.

    Franconia Notch parking survey

I'm done too. Not need to split and I don't mean to sound vitriolic in my comments. That's why it's generally best to not make gun comments in threads about hiking. We all get fired up. I see your point and respect your opinion but simply don't like to see EF equated with ELF. They are not the...

    Franconia Notch parking survey

You might be older. From the article you posted: "And even though there was no evidence that Earth First! was involved, the Eureka Times-Standard proclaimed, Earth First! Blamed for Worker's Injuries." Mendocino County Sheriff Shea put out a widely quoted press release that was almost gleeful...

    Franconia Notch parking survey

***** Ahem....just for clarification, I don't believe Earth First has ever been associated with any gun violence or violence against people of any form. You might get them on pulling a few survey stakes and possibly sweetening a bulldozer gas tank or two in defense of some natural areas out...
