    Franconia Notch parking survey

This would be the most effective long term solution in my opinion. It comes from a place of reason and courtesy, acknowledges that this is not a new law but IS newly enforced, and avoids towing which would be bad optics in this case. In order to change this habit, they're going to have to be...

    Franconia Notch parking survey

Interesting points throughout this conversation. I'll add my two cents to respond to a few themes coming out. 1. My concern is maintaining the ecosystem and natural quality of NH. The ridge has too many people on busy days. Parking lots don't alleviate that. 2. What would be useful is data...

It sounds like it's on this weekend. I'll be interested to see how this plays out.

    Some Twin Mtn Area Observations

I stopped in the infamous gas station last week. Got gas, coffee, a muffin. Owners are VERY nice and I chatted with one for awhile. They have tables and umbrellas on the deck still and it's a much more welcoming place. I'll make a point to support them since customers were driven away by the...

    Bear Grylls films in NH

I love that he was choppered into Lost Pond. It's closer to the A-Team than reality. Bears Grylls has had this reputation a long time. Makes for a good laugh, especially when you know he could walk 10 minutes behind the film crew and buy a Junior Naturalist Patch at the PNVC. The hunts for...

New WMNF Policy For Trail Adopters

My quote stems from the fact that trail maintenance in April is rare, especially on northern trails. If I did maintenance on Ammo Ravine in April, it was not often and on snow. Blowdown removal only. That's my perspective of course, but my thought was to not plan to get in a maintenance trip...

Related: Appalachia parking was full and on road side by 6 AM this morning. (Saturday)

New WMNF Policy For Trail Adopters

Looks like those who do a spring and fall run will need to hit the fall cleanup before 9/30 in order to count for the year. I put Ammo Ravine back up for adoption after 7 years, but I did get a few (at least one) USFS card from Jennie B. thanking me. It came with the parking pass. Bruce was...

worth a new "Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites" thread ?

I am amazed that BK holds on. No way it turns a profit.

    Franconia Notch parking survey

One thing I truly believe I can always count on. Human nature. I will be earlier than the crowd. That said, I'll be nowhere near Franconia Ridge on summer Saturdays. Look for me on one of the Howks.

Woman climbs tree to escape coyotes - Near Boston!

Curious. When is the last confirmed fatal attack of an adult human by a coyote in the US? I recall a young child in the 80's. Not to make light, but to maintain perspective, I highly recommend checking for ticks and cutting back on sugar and processed foods.

Hiking under the influence (of electronics)

I was going to skip this thread. I'm glad I didn't. Two nuggets here: Tom's comment, "As I get older, the USFS slogan "Land of Many Uses" seems to gain more and more wisdom." Indeed. And this is the best story I've read in awhile. Ozzy's "Coming Down the Mountain?" Sabbath's "Snowblind?"...

Hiker to be Charged for Rescue

You may be right however given the chance to replay the whole Mason case, I think they would let that one go the second time around. The optics of that decision were terrible and he wasn't negligent, thus the settlement. In the second case, the man hiking continued on in the face of worsening...

Hiker to be Charged for Rescue

I don't see negligence ever proven here. Tough situation when a host of S & R personnel go out on a goose chase. The optics are terrible for everyone when it happens and feathers understandably get ruffled. You can hear the collective WTF and associated eye roll from the team when they heard the...

    Danger, danger!!!

And the largest risk to you still may have been the risk of a motor vehicle accident on the way to or from the trail.

    Danger, danger!!!

There is one university absolutely off my daughter's list of potential schools. That's enough bad decisions from them. Does anyone read this stuff before they move forward anymore? Absurd.

    Advice for Zion/Bryce/Arches/Moab Quick Trip

My favorite book by my favorite author begins with, "this is the most beautiful place on Earth." Ed Abbey. Desert Solitaire. Written about his time in Arches specifically but the SW in general. I'll be back. It won't be long.

    Advice for Zion/Bryce/Arches/Moab Quick Trip

I wanted to thank everyone for the advice. The trip was fabulous and we certainly made the most out of the three days. Observation Point was spectacular and the hike out of the canyon gave us a great perspective. On day two we decided to stay in the canyon bottom. We hiked the river trail into...

    Advice for Zion/Bryce/Arches/Moab Quick Trip

Trip is set: Another thanks for all the great advice. I've taken notes on viewpoints and places to visit and am using the advice here heavily. I think we have a great plan for the time we are there. Dave - we'll be in V of F on the 18th and may see you there. We arrive too late to visit on...
