    Advice for Zion/Bryce/Arches/Moab Quick Trip

Thanks. After looking at Valley of Fire SP, I think we'll spend a fair amount of time there but may look into some short options on the last day. Appreciate it.

    Advice for Zion/Bryce/Arches/Moab Quick Trip

Great advice. Thanks. West Rim Trail, 18 miles top down hike is now day 2 plan. My sister is curious about exposure on this route. It doesn't sound bad, but yes, I've been told we are not doing AL at least not together. I'll be back to do another trip. Any concerns on West Rim 18 mile one...

    Advice for Zion/Bryce/Arches/Moab Quick Trip

Thanks Dave. Planning on the first shuttle daily for that reason. Definite early birds here. We may see you sometime there. Hiking the first half of the week following next. I'll check that FB page.

    Advice for Zion/Bryce/Arches/Moab Quick Trip

Thank you! I'm copying that advice into my notes for the day. We will check out that spot. We'll be waking in Springdale on day one so we will have time. Flying in the previous night. Appreciate it.

    Advice for Zion/Bryce/Arches/Moab Quick Trip

The trip is on and I appreciate all the advice here. I've got a few more questions now that I have a framework of time and some plans in place. Here goes: Some Details: Three days of hiking with a red eye flight back the third night from LV. Staying three nights in Springdale. Day 1...

    Planning Monroe attempt.

As I'm sure yours quite aware, many hikers on Ammo have followed ski tracks and found themselves well off trail and sometimes on the "wrong" side of the river heading up. I speak from an old experience myself.

    Hiker Rescue in Maine

I laughed a bit too. Good thought but maybe not the best time to pontificate about good hiking practices.

    Hiker Rescue in Maine

This one was lucky. Good he had a verified location and the searchers got him in three hours. I can't imagine he had a lot of time in those conditions. Kudos to the rescuers. Probably should have stayed put but more details may come. Hard decision to make to stay even if it's the right one.

    Planning Monroe attempt.

Sounds like a great day! The northern Pressies cleared out nicely too in the mid afternoon, but yeah, had to be cold. The wind had to be fierce up there based on the valley. That upper crossing below Ammonoosuc Falls is a great turn around point on these days. Sometimes it's a real challenge...

    Planning Monroe attempt.

Not sure what the summits are like but looking at the Northern Presidentials earlier, I would guess socked in and very windy. Any summits on that ridge today are going to take a window of opportunity and some grit I imagine. Not today for me. No ladders on Ammo Ravine trail by the way, but...

    Improving Hike Safe Card

Ultimately my decision to buy the card came from wanting to help F&G with the rapidly increasing costs of S&R in NH. I'm not concerned about recklessness or negligence and the distinction between them and what the card covers and when at this point. Ideally I won't need to find out. I simply...

    Improving Hike Safe Card

It does sound a bit like a place where you lock up your backpack and boots....the hikesafe. Considering the success of the program to date, I don't foresee changes. (If it ain't broke) I did think email reminders were sent though, but I'm in my first year of the card, so can't verify. Check...

Top Ten Worst Small Towns in NH!

Sunflowers in Jaffrey is a fabulous restaurant IMO. This dumb article assumes people don't like rural places. Good. Go to the cities. Love them. Stay there. There are people there. ;)

March 8, 2018 Coastal Storm Data

I would say Dover, NH got 16 inches based on what's on the table in my yard. Heavy. Edit: 17.5 to 18" based on a few spots. Consistent.

    Hancock North & South (3 March 2018)

Trails: Hancock Notch, Cedar Brook, Hancock Loop. Conditions and Equipment: Hancock Notch and Cedar Brook were hard packed with some loose powder atop. Saw many with light traction and some snowshoes but I barebooted fine. The north loop is loose powder mostly over ice in spots. I used dull...

Man falls 20 feet ice climbing in Crawford Notch

http://http://www.unionleader.com/Fish-and-Game:-Man-falls-20-feet-while-ice-climbing-in-Harts-Location?template=mobileart Rescuers got him and he's okay but sounds like numerous injuries. Unrelated, I saw a chopper flying low near the Mount Washington summit Thursday around noon and was...

Washington, Monroe, Eisenhower, Pierce via ART and CP (2-22-18)

Trails: Ammonoosuc Ravine and Crawford Path Conditions: Spring hiking conditions. Ammo Ravine was packed snow for first two miles to Gem Pool. Fast moving light traction. From Gem Pool up the steeps is a mix of hardpack and ice. Light traction good ascending but would want more descending...

What Winter Fleece Jackets Should I Consider?

"If you are keeping something you like about ten years, I wouldn't stray much from what you currently have." I wish that were easier. If I could find the same or similar model, I would, but after 10 years, there have been a lot of changes! If I could still buy a '96 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 new I'd...

FYI: Northern Pass High Voltage Transmission Project

I can see NP as Leaping Lanny Poffo. Making sudden fast moves all over the place with no rhyme or reason. Quick changes in direction and plans. Stopping to periodically read some nonsense from the back of a frisbee only to eventually get beat.
