All Trails Strikes again - Hiker rescue on Osceola

Another example of discrepancies between the map and the ground, most likely due to old map data. The red circled area in the 2nd pic is where I was in the 3rd pic, and according to the plain map in the 1st pic there should have been an ATV or foot trail at most in that spot.

All Trails Strikes again - Hiker rescue on Osceola

Here are a few screenshots of a hike up Sally Mountain in Jackman ME a few months ago. The difference between where the map says the trail is and my actual track is pretty significant in places. I was on the blazed trail the entire way.

All Trails Strikes again - Hiker rescue on Osceola

GPS data as in coordinates you can program as waypoints? Not that I’m aware of, and I use the Pro version for everything. Here’s what the map screen looks like. So you get a map in one of several formats with the trail highlighted, and an elevation gain diagram that’s not to scale at all - it...

Petition to change the name of Mt Washington

It might have been immoral, but it was an economic necessity at the time. So was child labor 150 years ago, most families didn‘t have the luxury of sending their kids to school. In 2-300 years who knows what people will think of us for practices we see as necessary or normal today.

    Cog Railway?

I’m a mechanic for a company with a large fleet of on- and off-road diesel equipment, and the DEF systems have the most reliability issues. One problem is that if the DEF system fails the engine will derate or make less power. A LOT less power. This doesn’t sound like something you want...

Long Sleeve Shirts: Heat, Bugs, Humidity?

I wear long pants and a long sleeved silkweight synthetic shirt all the time, when it’s hot it’s hot whether I’m in shorts or not. My short sleeve baselayer shirts are for winter LOL. Long pants/sleeves keep the sun off you and create a microclimate next to your skin that controls sweat...

Petition to change the name of Mt Washington

How about an LHA named “USS Mount Suribachi”? I’m sure there’s a story or reason why ships are named what they are. As far as renaming goes, at what point do we stop? If we can rename a mountain for what the local pre-white-guy inhabitants called it (which I have no problem with, I think Denali...

Why Does My Tent Fly Smell Like Poop?

Try the Marmot Hammer, it’s a 2P single-wall Bibler-style tent that weighs <4lb without the vestibule. If you have a very lofty or 6’6” bag it’ll probably touch at the head and/or the foot. But it’s light and has a lot of guyout points (7 or 8 IIRC.)

This car has climbed Mt Washington

I drove up in my Jeep with a friend in Aug 2016, the manual was nice going down. Just stick it in 2nd on the steep parts and relax. It went from sunny and around 60F to pouring, gale force winds, and 35F within 15-20 minutes after we got up there, they closed the road up and once the rain...

I think the billboards for this place start in PA.

Why Does My Tent Fly Smell Like Poop?

My 20-odd year old TNF Mountain Tent fly seam tape was peeling and the tent floor was sticky. I filled out a warranty claim online and a few weeks later I was told to send it in for evaluation. They deemed it non-reparable (I wish I’d kept the poles!) and I was issued an e-gift card for the...

    Trouble on the Ridge (again).

There are a lot of things that could be done, most unpleasant to some degree. “Dump your gear out” stations at the trailhead so a Ranger can check that you have weather-appropriate gear. A short quiz to see if you know the most basic steps to take in an emergency. Mandatory hiker insurance that...

Tops of boots above ankles wearing out

Is wearing the braces under your socks an option? Or maybe liner socks, braces, then a lighter weight than normal sock on top.

    Sunset hikes, below 4k footers??

Pleasant Mountain in Bridgton ME, via Ledges Trail. 1.7 miles, 1500 feet of elevation gain. Want something easier? Douglas Mtn in Sebago, 1.25 miles and maybe 500‘ el.

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

CMP has us over a barrel, it knows it can basically do whatever it wants and that neither the state nor any of its agencies will say or do anything. No negotiating for payments with the end user, just pass the expenses on to us. What are we going to do, get our power from someone else?

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

That was my point, we don’t get anything out of it. It might cost us if CMP has to repair and maintain the lines and passes those costs on to us.

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

No, the goal is to get more electricity. The method that was chosen, after both NH & VT said “thanks, but no thanks”, was to build a power line corridor through part of Maine that a clear majority of Maine residents are opposed to. There’s a small solar farm in Adams MA, why don’t they just...

N.E. Clean Power Connect in Maine - Should we care ?

I live in Jackman ME and do a lot of hiking in areas which the corridor passes through. You really have to look for signs of it, so despite what many opponents say it’s not despoiling any natural beauty. They’re honestly doing a very good job of keeping it non-intrusive. My problem with it is...

    Latest Preferred Snowshoes?

I like Louis Garneau and GV snowshoes best. Preferred models are Garneau Blizzard III (tube-framed backcountry) and Everest (plastic w/traction rails backcountry), while from GV I like Mountain Extreme (traction frame) and Wide Trail (LARGE tube-framed hiking/utility.) The Blizzard IIIs are...
