Could this the the solution to the SAR dilemma?

I'm laughing at the fact that this appears to be a "universal" dilemma. IF this doesn't get their point across, I doubt anything will. I figure they must have been out on one too many rescues to come up with this. Sometimes you get better results if you just say it like it is.

Could this the the solution to the SAR dilemma?

Found this on a friend's web site. This is just what we need. One of these at every trail head. This is too perfect. I can't stop laughing.

    RIP Porkchop, The Hiking Hound

What a beautiful dog and outstanding mountaineer. I am so sad for your loss. He had a wonderful life no doubt about it, the very best a dog good ask for. I extend to all who loved Porkchop my deepest sympathy. Here is a little poem for you. "As I walk across you heart and find my place...

    ice ax training

Beth...I am happy you are taking the course, most especially after reading Doug's opening statement.."your ice ax can kill you." I never thought of it that way but he is right. It is all about practice but a good instructor should be able to point out all the little mistakes that can be...

    ice ax training

Check with the AMC. AT one time they had a winter course and they took you into Tuckerman Ravive wear you practiced use of ice axe. It was offered on a weekend. They might still offer it. It was listed as "Winter Mountain Safety". I bet you could take a class with someone from IME in No...

This Year's Hiking Season, I am THANKful for....

In a nutshell.... I am deeply thankful for Molly and Tucker, for the privilege of helping vets and students one day/week at the Tufts Wildlife Clinic, and for every moment I spend in the woods. Yes...and for a roof over my head and food on the table. Last but not least for the Voyageur Outward...

    women's winter hiking boot suggestions

Just got off the phone from talking to Garmont USA. They were very grateful that I took the time to notify them of the typo 35 vs -35 problem. I was the first to let them know and they will be correcting their web site prompto, and calling Campmor to ask them to do the same. The USA site is...

    women's winter hiking boot suggestions

Had never heard of vapor barrier "socks" until I took my OB course. They were mandatory gear. They worked very will in those bitter cold temps and our boots were insulated to -40. Another requirement. I had Sorel Bear boots. This was different than hiking in the Whites in the sense that we...

    women's winter hiking boot suggestions

It has to be a typo. I checked the Garmont site and it states 35 but I am certain this is a typo. I had called them prior to making my purchase because I wanted to be sure I bought those insulated to -35. I went over each boot with them. I still have my tags on the pair I recently...

    Maple syrup

Also, when we hike we see lots of maples. And Eddie is right. You can't beat maple "sugar" for a quick boost. And it's soooo delicious. Carry a little syrup in your pack and when you run into wonderful fresh powder, you can make and eat maple snow balls. ( I do eat fresh snow, providing...

    women's winter hiking boot suggestions

Last year I hiked in the less aggressive version of Garmont Momentum's, and I believe they are insulated to 15 degrees. Needed to upgrade because of my orthotics so this year so I went with the Garmont Momentum SNOW VERSION. Insulated to -35. Got the men's version for I believe Amazon at a...

    Doggie sleeping bag?

Bindi is adorable. I see worship in those eyes. I think her coat is more like that of an Akita. Shorter fur but both undercoat and overcoat. Mol has both as well but she does have oodles of hair. Akita's are very much mountain dogs as well. Bear hunters in fact. They tracked 800 lb Yezo...

Energy Drinks - Risks and Rewards

Just thought of another situation that arose when someone ingested a decongestant for his "sniffles", and drank an extra large Dunkin Donut coffee. He had already had coffee a few hours earlier. He presented to the ER with hypertension and symptoms of stroke. Otherwise healthy man, middle...

    Doggie sleeping bag?

Last evening as I enjoyed TRAIL ANGELS on the documentary channel, I came up with this brand new plan for you. Years ago, I used this nice red fleece lined, water repellent dog coat for my elderly...Old English Sheepdog when we camped out. I have hung on to it for years. This might just be...

    No good deed goes un-punished

Wow....my faith if also restored. OOPS...just had a thought. Maybe they really liked it, used it for the rest of the hiking season, plan to ski this winter, and won't need a headlamp! How is the battery? ( I am having doubts again.)

    Thermos

Tom...this is the one I don't care for. I checked the name after writing my post today. My Starbucks better but not terrific.

    Doggie sleeping bag?

That explains it. Wet and cold is a bad combo even for dogs. I don't know if Bindi would crawl into a liner. Maybe carry a lightweight fleece blanket and you can always put the emergency blanket on over it if she is really cold. BYW...I don't live in MN . I did an Outward Bound...

Energy Drinks - Risks and Rewards

I can only say this. In my youth I drank LOTS of caffeine and one fine day I had a heart rate of about 180-200 and had difficulty breathing. Bottom line is I have had to take beta blockers for years now and much to my cardiologist's dismay I do drink 1 cup of of coffee am and pm. I will...
