Windmills getting closer to the Whites - second and third Plymouth-area wind farms

You can not talk about individual aspects of the wind energy issue without talking about the whole subject. They can and will affect our landscape and how we see our mountains. This is hiking related. They can and will refuel the need for heavier transmission lines similiar to the Northern Pass...

Went up in today and the trail is in great shape! We were told an ambitious AMC group broke it out!

Has anyone got any idea how the Little River crossing is right now? I know some years it can be iffy.

Windmills getting closer to the Whites - second and third Plymouth-area wind farms

Great link and information Creag! December 31 is an important date to the people trying to push these through due to loss of many subsidies after that. Time to call your politicians if you want to have a voice!

Windmills getting closer to the Whites - second and third Plymouth-area wind farms

These are being approved on the state level and not through the towns. My parents live near the proposed wind farms in the Danbury area and due merely to lower rural populations it is hard to get a strong petition. These international companies will and have come in to collect on the subsidies...

Maybe it's worth reincarnating one of the various alphabet bushwhacks up to the summit in the winter!;)

    Hunting season for deer

And since as Tom identified, it is possible for them to shoot people in their hunting party whom they know are there and are probably wearing blaze orange its possible to become an unfortunate statisic. I can't carry a tune so singing is definitely out but bright orange and occasional whistling...

Anyone have a dog that doesn't like to hike?

Never had a dog of my own before Thor, my Norwegian Elkhound, and he is always ready to go. I have been fortunate to meet many happy dogs on the trail and despite a few that were getting tired, I have never met any that seemed unhappy to be there. Thor and I both take the better part of the...

    Hunting season for deer

Roy, It's interesting how far into the evening a hunter can push when night is. I actually have had a red dot appear on my clothes one time and quietly reached up and turned on my headlamp to make it go away! I dealt with it as an honest mistake and chalked up part of that to my hiking in the...

    Hunting season for deer

Just a reminder that hunting season for deer by muzzleloader opened yesterday in NH and regular firearm season opens in a couple of weeks. I realize bear season has already been open but the deer season puts much more hunters in the woods. Despite the hunter's safety training and all the public...

Yes, Thanks Pat & Audrey for another great time that we always look forward to! Can never help myself from sampling the works of so many great cooks each year! Bev and Thor and I all had a nice evening!

    Man vs Women

And my tongue-in-cheek reply got me a PM saying I was harsh. It was not specifically directed at the OP. Point is I do feel this is aimlessly trying to pigeonhole attributes of undefined qualities while generating a conversation. And though it generated forty responses, I can feel its lame...

    Man vs Women

Pretty lame way to try to string together a thread! Best will never be defined in a consensus, nor should it be! Best ~ = best looking, best smelling after a long hike, best at reading the map, best at not using the map, best at making it fun, best at getting there faster, best at leaving...

    Logging Artifacts on Flume Mountain

Creag, Sometimes when rolling logs on a log brow you draw the small end around with the peavy to keep it rolling square to the intended load. A sharper angled hook like the top one in the photo is an advantage at this. Other than that method you would use the pike to stall your end while the...

Heroic rescue on Franconia Ridge - Sept 19, 2012

Awesome that they got him down and that he was able to crawl for a signal with a bad injury! Well done on his part and all involved. After the incident with "Fred" Lawrence and James Osborne in that same area I pondered the same question as Jacob. In a fierce storm retreating into the wind...

    Compass bearing for BB

Here's a link to a winter hike I did with good pics of the valley of the birches. I actually camped at the top of the valley near where the steep slabbing comes down to it on a decent. Obviously, you won't be taking my route in!;) http://good-times.webshots.com/slideshow/576768382MQmLNA
