My Epic Trek To Owls Head 10-22-11

Very nice TR and excellent photos Phil! They did your adventure justice and it looks like you got some peak Pemi foliage on your trip. I find the long Lincoln Woods exit actually goes better with the headlamp so you don't look down that long tunnel. It also helps to have someone along to talk to...

You know you are NOT a peakbagger when...

Love your candor and freestyle of hiking Patrick! My first trip to Owl's Head was on a New year's Eve weekend as a 3-day backpack solo with nothing more than a summer tent and a zest for adventure! A previous group had broken to the base of the slide so I headed out during a storm using the...

"The Grid" has replaced "The List"

Oh come on Mike there is some beautiful weather in April! Those nice wet smooching spruces miss you already!;) Besides I know a "shortcut" over Franconia Ridge where you can miss most of the crossings!:D

"The Grid" has replaced "The List"

Perhaps before I retire! Love all the seasons including spring especially if there is still snow so it's a great year-round fitness program. So far the bones don't creak too bad and if I keep things down to one or two trips and multiple peaks per month I don't feel I am over doing it. Hiking...

    Shadowy Creep Finishes The 48

Grats Wu! Don't know if I would say we are blood kin after seeing you in action on Owlie! Definitely was fun doing some time on the trail with you! Also sorry I missed meeting your dad by minutes on Greylock, I'm sure he would have liked to be up on top for your finish. Somehow I can't picture...

BeccaM finishes the Grid! October 8th

Congratulations to Becca for an amazing accomplishment and having fun every step of the way! Way to finish in style, I consider the Northern Presis tough peaks because my knees don't tolerate the rocks. Just thinking about how much more you gridders endure is so unbelievable!:D Patrick, Love...

Mt. Carr, NH Oct 8, 2011 - Bearly made it out alive / no joke

Billski, Good for you to get out of that one humbled but whole! I climbed up Whiteface by Blueberry Ledge today with my Norwegian Elkhound, Thor. After we went over to Passaconaway and on the way out some folks camping invited me for tea, seriously, and it was good. During our discussion they...

Mt. Whitney via the East Buttress (III 5.7) route

Excellent photos and trip report Leaf! Thanks for keeping us all in on the adventures you and Jeff are sharing! I thought grade III meant half a day! So do you mean 7am to 7pm is a half day?;)

Come on Baby, Light my Fire!

Chip I actually do light a fire on ice or snow with a layer of wood as a base. Haven't you ever been to a nice bonfire on a lake?;) Never underestimate the power of fate on the trail to require you to use your head and survival skills. Once on a Thanksgiving weekend my sister-in-law and I were...

FYI: Northern Pass High Voltage Transmission Project

Not in favor of Northern Pass as propsed but also worthy of mentioning is that part of the existing supply comes from wood burning plants. They can burn up to about a truckload of wood chips in an hour and have promoted some rather reckless clear-cutting. Earlier discussion in this thread...

Come on Baby, Light my Fire!

One thing I gleaned from the Scott Mason account where the young eagle scout was down in Great Gulf with a sprained ankle was his clever use of antibacterial lotion for fire starter. He was able to start fires right on top of snow with it on twigs and branches because of its alcohol content. I...

    Best of the West

Sue where is the like button when you need it! Did you name it that because of your beasts of burden or the company you kept?;) Keep all the pictures and tr's coming, they make me jealous as heel but long for a trip out west someday!

    Hiker Lost Near Isolation

It sounds like she was using the Rocky Branch Trail because she had left her sleeping bag at Rocky Branch 2 shelter and kept going to the summit with a bivy and tarp on board up Isolation Trial. This section to Davis Path has plenty of vague portions and herd paths that could run someone around...

    Nellie's first hike

You may find that as you gradually hike more populated trails your dog will start to socialize better. With my own dog I started with trails that were not very busy and then did some transition. I personally would not try to leave the trail because I feel once much of the training passes your...

White Mountain National Forest Open as of Tuesday 8/30/2011

Thanks Roy, I'm sure it would be an interesting read! It would be nice to have a few more gauge stations in the north country for places like Little River and Gale River but all that comes at a cost. Still is well appreciated when others share info and pics in trip reports or threads.
