USFS Campsites on Cherry Mountain Road

This is managed by the Forest Service and is considered "Dispersed Camping". Also I believe it is first come first serve and are meant to be an alternative to improved camping where sites can be reserved, fire pits are available along with outhouses. Probably not on AMC Maps as they don't want...

AT trail damage from Hurricane Helene

Somehow, I think the people who live in the area and depend on hikers for income that potentially will be affected for the next decade by this event might disagree.

    Hiking Moat Mountains to Attitash

As I mentioned already when I did this was over 20 years ago so the details are a bit vague. Also no GPS so no tracking info. I believe we departed the trail near and below the summit of Big Attitash then gaining the ridge.

    Hiking Moat Mountains to Attitash

Been there. Once past the turn off for North Moat the trail is not used that much and can be hard to follow. When we left the trail turning towards Attitash on skis it landed up being one of the toughest bushwhacks I have ever done. This was over 20 years ago, but things may be different now...

    Wild River road

Very nice update. I concur rivers are way low! I believe the drought line is now just below the National Forest.

Trapped on the Trap Dike: New York forest rangers rescue two people from notoriously dangerous hike

Having done The Trap Dike multiple times both 3 season and Winter the biggest issue IMO is the exposure. The crux definitely has the potential for serious injury if not a fatality. If you are already a technical climber chances are your skill set is more appropriate for this endeavor than if...

National Geographic: Remains of Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine believed to have been found on Everest

Hopefully you were able to get a set and a perm before your Summit Push.

National Geographic: Remains of Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine believed to have been found on Everest

Thankyou for that correction. I was off by one camp. I had remembered he had an intermediate Camp before the more bivy style camp for the final push. Forgot his sweetie stayed low. I do believe she did climb higher trying to spot him on his decent. Even so more credit to Messner on truly being...

National Geographic: Remains of Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine believed to have been found on Everest

Nena was at camp at The North Col but not the camp he made his Summit Push from.

National Geographic: Remains of Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine believed to have been found on Everest

I need no confirmation. Large expeditions the labeling of one's gear is quite normal. Bottom line is you are not handling, using and transporting your own gear all the time by yourself. With an expedition the size of this including around 150 porters having one's socks labeled made it a whole...

National Geographic: Remains of Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine believed to have been found on Everest

Very good points. Messner also went alone, without O's and an army of support. In other words, everything was on his back until he was too exhausted to carry it all. Also don't forget he fell in a crevasse along the way with no one to get himself out by himself. Yes his clothing was superior but...

National Geographic: Remains of Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine believed to have been found on Everest

This is very interesting and hopefully brings to Irvine's Family some closure. No disrespect but I'm with Grey J on this one and his line of thinking. A very debatable subject IMO as far as "Greatest Achievement in Mountaineering History". My vote would go to Messner and his solo climb of...

    Footwear of Hut Crews

We probably crossed paths at some point as my outdoor retail career was at it’s peak during that time. I know a few folks that were reps and moved on. It’s a tough life style but worth the perks if you are a skier, hiker, or climber albeit an under 50 guy’s gig for most. You probably remember...

    Footwear of Hut Crews

I was an EB guy. I also still have an old pair of Boreal Fires. We use to hike in to obscure Crags with our Limmers then convert over to one of the above to actually climb. There were no approach shoes until the famed 5 Tennies arrived. Yea it is interesting getting old. I definitely don’t fit...
