Redington wind farm is back on the table

I had the pleasure of meeting Bill and Orient (and Bill's sons) in March a few years back. They were on their way down from a winter Chimney Pond trip. I guess Bill has returned to BSP on mutliple occasions since his thru-hike and uses the dog-exemption each time. I was kind of nice to see a...

    I'm published!?

I liked their marketing approach with this not-catalog. It was explained well, was refreshing, and seems to speak to many of us, even if it is just a more clever iteration of marketing from a younger breed of marketers. Nice job, Dude.

    Some Bushwhacker Guidelines

Obviously this is one of those posts written only to greedily gather green squares. :D Well, I will fall for it - hook, line and sinker. Well done. spencer

    Your boats?

Here is our Penobby 17. Look closely at my hat... we also have a Grumman tuna can (love the keel on flatwater) and a sunfish with a hole in the deck and a matching one in the hull...

    Softshell conclusion-years later

I haven't read every word above but I'll offer the following observations I wish I had thought about when I bought my first one: 1. There is a whole continuum from those with little insulation value, high breathability and low water repellancy, to those that are warm, dry and not very...

    Non-hiking deathmarches

That would be a duathlon. (first thing, second thing, first thing again) An equivalent triathlon would be boat/drive/hike, I think. Next weekend, I'll do an event that involves sawing, log rolling, fly casting, chopping and then beer drinking. I call it a pentathlon. When I backpacked around...

    Asquamchamauke River headwaters 4/5/09

I lost a nalgene down between a couple of the boulders on the JBD headwall several years ago. On the same trip, Joanna sprained a finger, which now remains mildly crooked. I now have to trick her into bushwhacking. She won't participate if she realizes it ahead of time. Anytime the subject of...

Baxter: Chimney Route, Knife Edge, Baxter, Hamlin Ridge

I don't think anyone would be skiing the Chimney in those conditions. It doesn't get the sun that the Hamlin chutes or the Saddle get. In fact, it doesn't seem to get much sun at all until very late in the day. There isn't much that hasn't been done and surely someone's done it but of all the...

    Missing hiker found

I didn't realize he is a such a hero! 30 pounds of ice screws? By my calculation, that would be about 90 screws! 350 ft of rope? I hope whatever guide service he had contracted with for Rainier bans him from the mountain. I'm not a big fan of getting on the case of those who have accidents...

Baxter: Chimney Route, Knife Edge, Baxter, Hamlin Ridge

crumpled broken mess = bad celebration, drinks and dirty talk in bunkhouse = good It was certainly a fine trip - the highlight of my winter season, for sure. I put my pics up on Webshots, too, although I didn't bother with captions there.
