    Wild River Road Status

Several years ago a friend and I decided to do the Black Angel trail and we met a FS volunteer doing a people count and asking what trails we had done and what trails were planning to use. . We talked with him for a bit and he revealed that the FS was coming up with justification to remove the...

Merriam Woods - A cautionary tale

https://www.climbing.com/places/sport-climbing-new-hampshire/ https://www.mountainproject.com/area/120706547/merriam-woods-aka-russell-crags Looking at a WMNF map, it appears that the location is just outside the WMNF declaration boundary on the south slope of Russell Crag. The law of...

    Wild River Road Status

Given the FS proclivity to get rid of things that might require maintenance in the future like the nearby Moriah Brook bridge, I wonder if they might just close down the campground and leave the road like it is until they have a planned cut that needs the road? My guess is the revenue from the...

At what point does it become enabling?

Both the Cog and the Autoroad mentions options for rides down on their websites, both are presented in way that they make no guarantees. The Cannon Mountain Tram does not mention any hiker specific ride down. The autoroad used to have a sliding scale for cost for ride down, the cost went up as...

    Burgeon Outdoor Brand

Let face the facts, American made gear is going to be substantially more expensive. The big cost in clothing is labor and legal US labor is going to cost more than a third world country, substantially more. Unless the folks doing the labor are direct employees, there are plenty of middleman that...

Rainbow Family Gathering in the Kilkennies Fourth of July

The forest service has made the same broad threats before but to date arrests and prosecutions have been slim during past events. A few drug dealers and folks driving under the influence get busted but along with the threats the FS brings in a response unit that effectively works with the groups...

Rainbow Family Gathering in the Kilkennies Fourth of July

The consensus of the participants at the event in NH last year was "too cold and wet", find a "warmer drier place" in the future

Nice "Summer" forecast from the top of Mt Washington

I did Garfield on Friday and the winds were still whipping around 7 AM. I had liner gloves on all the way to the top and at one point had to pull on an extra heavy fleece. Luckily the winds dropped as the morning went on. Hard to beat the visibility no haze to speak of 100 miles for sure.

Glen Ellis Parking Lot - Quite the project

Dianas Bath has an entirely precast vault toilet with log wall patterns in it. I suspect that it comes on the back of truck in couple of pieces at most and dropped on a pad with precast vault underneath. BTW, the original Glen Ellis parking areas claim to fame was that the rest rooms had...

Glen Ellis Parking Lot - Quite the project

The contractor is back on site and moving a lot of dirt. My guess is they were probably closed down for some wildlife issues like nesting season. Still a lot of works left to do, if it gets reopened it would be leaf season. I think there are some building in the project but my guess is they will...

    Baxter State Park bushwhacks

Thanks for the very rare photos. I talked with a botanist a few years ago that was doing a long term rare plant survey of the alpine region of BSP, he had been down to the pond down via the ridge on the east side of the pond from the Caribou Spring area. His recollection was a nasty bushwhack...

    Mt Washington Summit Study Approved

https://indepthnh.org/2024/06/26/council-oks-mount-washington-environmental-study-hears-concerns-about-nh-electric-co-op/ Interesting to note that the governor's opinion of the expected results before the study has started. No doubt that has been made very clear to the firm hired. ;)

New Major Mountain biking trail Newfoundland to Florida going through the whites

I gave a ride to someone I know who was meeting his son and planning to do 600 miles going south from Gorham on the Eastern Divide trail. This is a new one to me. https://bikepacking.com/eastern-divide-trail/ I had thought it would be following the Cross NH adventure trail and it does for a...

I have done it both ways, with the Ebike its a nice cool down. I like to be hiking quite early so would rather be riding back to the car in the afternoon but to each their own.
