Mt Adams is Holy Mountain of 19 in world

There used to be symbols painted on boulders near the summit sign but unless they have been repainted in the last few years they were no longer visible the last time I was up there.

Reminder - NH Bike Weeks starts tomorrow

My general observation is that the motorcycle crowd rarely are hikers or planning to hike when out on the bike so other than interactions on the roads or places that requires a short walk like Sabbaday Falls or the Basin it seems be mostly a mutually exclusive activity. Post hike it can be an...

Reminder - NH Bike Weeks starts tomorrow

If it's a good weather forecast, lots of motorcycles on the roads predominantly east of I 93 but there are many large tours that run around the highways in the whites. Activity ramps up this weekend and during the week with various special events. The auto road no longer does motorcycle days. If...

Moose video with Katahdin in the background

https://www.wabi.tv/2024/06/06/maine-guide-captures-moosetifying-moment-camera/ I expect anyone who has driven up to BSP will remember that stretch of road. Good to see there is still a healthy moose population up in Northern Maine.

    Stairs Col Condition

Moved. BTW, I did this hike last summer. Blazing early on near Rocky Branch shelter was a bit sparse as there are a lot of old logging roads/trails in that area. Once we turned off Rocky Branch trail the foot bed was easy to follow.

    Alpine Flowers 2024

It is really just an indication that the snow pack is pretty well gone which usually lines up with the last frosts. There were a couple of close calls in the valleys for frost in the last week. I was an optimist and planted tomatoes and peppers a week ago.

Glider Pilot Rescued after Crash in WMNF

There is a group that comes up to Gorham NH in the fall and runs gliders out of the local grass strip. Its not a big strip and when they come in on final approach there is not a lot or room or alternatives for landing. Never heard of an issue but seeing them skim over main street is quite unnerving.

    Alpine Flowers 2024

Not sure on the flowers but weather pattern has shifted early by a couple of weeks. The 7 in Kings Ravine came and was gone quickly.

Local Climber Dies in Gym Fall

Long ago I went to a climbing gym in Plymouth NH with a youth group. The training was pretty minimal for those belaying. One of the kids was belaying his dad and managed to not pull the belay handle when his dad fell until the last minute. It wasnt a major drop and there was a padded floor but...

Balsams Update - Go Big or Go home

https://unofficialnetworks.com/2024/05/31/balsams-update-2024/ Note, the plans and graphics reflect the entire build out of the resort. Phase 1 is far less. Subsequent phases could take decades.

    Success Pond Road Status 2024

Keith is the trails coordinator for that area. In theory individuals volunteer to maintain each trail but Keith tends to do a lot of maintenance as I do not know how many of the trails are adopted. When James River owned the land and the road and was actively maintaining it, road speeds were a...

Highwater Trail in the Wild River Area Rescue

https://nhfishgame.com/2024/05/29/hiker-assisted-out-of-the-woods-near-wild-river/ The WMNF cited this trail as one of the ways they would mitigate the removal of the former Moriah Brook Bridge. When water levels are low its not a major issue but with highwater, this trail adds miles to a hike...

Dolley Copp/Pinkham B Road still closed

To close this one out, I drove Pinkham B/Dolley Copp road this morning 5/28. The road is now open. Holes have been filled with gravel and the protruding rocks in the paved sections have been pulled out and smoothed over. They did not bring in lot of gravel to regrade the road and expect it will...

    Success Pond Road Status 2024

Hopefully the NH side of the road is in for better days after a decade of neglect by JR Dillon, the logging liquidator that gave the entire area a "crewcut". After doing several "greenmail" deals, they have been selling(or have sold) the cut over lands in multiple thousand acre blocks to anyone...
