Lost Hiker - Crawford Path Parking lot

Anyone who has participated in whitewater kayaking or canoeing probably have encountered canoes and kayaks wedged under trees and rocks. Water pressure from spring runoff is a very effective force. The Dry River is definitely a misnomer in the spring. Belcher's logging railroad book makes...

    Water filter

My go to is Aqua Mira. Takes up almost no room and with a spare mixing cap (saved from a prior set of bottles) I can make up couple of bottles at a time The trade off which is unacceptable to many is the wait. Its takes 5 minutes to mix the two components and then 30 plus minutes for the...

Lost Hiker - Crawford Path Parking lot

RIP Pure speculation is that there is a known hiker "trap" near Mizpah Springs hut that redirects folks down the Mt Clinton Trail instead of the Webster Cliffs trail. There have a few rescues over the years due to this confusing trail junction. Mt Clinton trail starts out well marked with a...

how much fun are group hikes?

BTW, VFTT used to have a lot of group hikes. I went on a memorable one where a member lined up a shuttle bus and we did the Lost Pass bushwhack with a stop by one of the best preserved former logging camps in the whites. That hike exceeded 10 folks due to logistics. It was great way of meeting...

The good old Flume Slide Shortcut - Rescue

https://www.nbcboston.com/news/local/group-of-mass-teen-hikers-rescued-from-nh-trail/3366721/ My guess is they went up Liberty, took the walk over to Flume and took longer than expected on the inevitable monorail down in the col and decided to head down Flume slide.

how much fun are group hikes?

ITs a different experience. I stick with smaller groups and they can be fun. Once it gets over 10 folks, the enjoyment level goes down. The problem usually is that the group has to proceed at the lowest common denominators pace.

    Another Day another Rescue

https://nhfishgame.com/2024/05/10/hikers-needed-to-be-rescued-on-mt-washington/ The trails out of the Great Gulf tend to melt out the latest. Wamsutta Trail faces North and is quite steep. It is going to be full of snow for quite a few more weeks.

Strong Northern Lights Potential Friday Night

Having seen it from my driveway In Gorham during a prior solar max, it may not be equal to an eclipse but in the running. I could look south and see the shimmering bands.

BTW, the North Peaks trail has great views east into the East Branch of Penobscot Drainage and KWW plus gives a rarely seen view north to the Travelers from the south while the NW basin trail is up close and personal to the Klondike including the east wall that consists of the Brothers, Fort and...

Most of the valley trails in Baxter are just the path of least resistance between two points. Russell Pond from Roaring brook is an old horse trail with not much of interest, Taking the Wassataquoik Stream trail adds a bit of interest on hot day due to the stream ford and swimming opportunities...

NW Basin Trail. I have done the NW basin trail a few times, its starts out in the woods along a stream but the views open up. Its very remote, you will see very few if any people. I have done it two ways. I hiked it with a group of scouts from a stay at Russel Pond and ended up at Chimney Pond...

Dolley Copp/Pinkham B Road still closed

As of today 5/7 I can attest that Dolly Copp road is still closed with orange cones at the Barnes field end. There were a couple of cars with out of state plates parked at the end so I expect they were either doing Pine Link or Pine Mountain trail.

Lost Hiker - Crawford Path Parking lot

At this point it is pure speculation. F&G has standard assumptions that they use to start S&R. F&G stated that the risk to rescue teams exceeded the potential for a rescue due to snow conditions. My guess is they assume the hiker's remains are off trail and given the large potential area it is...

Trailhead Break ins - Lake Region NH

https://www.wmur.com/article/vehicle-break-ins-new-hampshire-trailheads/60691615 Hope its isolated versus some sleazebag(s) moving into the area. Most car break ins are crimes of opportunity, if someone sees something they want, they pop a window to get it. I see cars all the time loaded with...
