Having spent several soggy sections hikes on the AT in the spring, everything does get damp/wet. The concept of warm while wet is a good concept but practical experience is its unless its a wet suit, its easy to get chilled.

I have had three folks I consider hiking partners and many folks I go hiking with. IMHO, until we get to the point where we could look at each other on a crappy day and say to each other "nope, let's go get a beer" is when they transition to a true hiking partner.

My guess is the gear carried was a bit light for an unplanned overnight. I was out backpacking for a few days down in Connecticut and despite warm days, the temps dropped real quick once the sun went down.
