    Meniscus surgery

Good luck tomorrow, sierra! Please let us know how everything works out. There's a lot of great advice in this thread- especially for those of us who are approaching the age of wear and tear. I hope everything goes well for you and we see you (and your doggo) back on the trails soon.

    RIP Paradox :(

I met John on a winter hike up Hale some years ago. It was there that he told me what his username meant. Funny guy. He will be sorely missed. RIP, John. I offer my condolences to his family and friends.

    Posting photos

Can someone explain how to post a Facebook photo here? I've tried a few different things, without success  I can figure out how to post a photo from my computer, but not Facebook.

    Bunnell Notch Trail ?

I hiked Bunnell Notch Trail on Saturday for Flags n the 48. There is only one true 'stream crossing' which was easily hopped. Overall, the trail was pretty dry. Very overgrown for the first half-mile, but easy to follow on its gentle grade the whole way.

    Flags on the 48

FYI, I will be on Cabot. I have participated in this event for many years with my son. He can't make it this year because he is off in the Navy:) If anyone wants to join me, the Cabot team is meeting at the Fish Hatchery Parking lot at 6:00 AM.

    Engine Hill Bushwhack In Summer

That is truly the best way to go up Isolation. I have hiked Isolation many times via that route. It has the best of everything about the Whites. Anxious to go back again!

Best Sources For Free Topo Maps Of The Northeast

I think I'll want to refer back to this thread in the future for all this information that is way over my head at the moment. I have had my GPS that was first mentioned back in this thread. Two years later, I've still never attached it to a computer, although it's on its second set of...

Ice Storm of 1998 , twenty year anniversary

Great job reflecting on that, peakbagger! I hiked Pierce and Eisenhower on January 11, 2008. It seemed that everything above a certain elevation was encased in ice still. The forest lost many birch tree tops in that storm. I think you can still see the evidence of that in certain areas.

Ever needed two headlamps (or lights)?

At an absolute minimum, I carry two headlamps and one flashlight, any time I head out for a hike. I'm a late starter, usually not putting boots on the trail before noon. And I hike real slow, much less than 1 mile per hour. Most hikes finish well after dark, and I like it that way! Right...

    Woman shot while mountain biking

Oddly enough, I was scolded by a woman on the Guinea Pond/Flat Mountain Pond Trail yesterday for not wearing blaze orange. I was wearing orange pants and a blaze yellow longsleeved top. Is the wearing of blaze orange a requirement for hiking in hunting season?

    Back up power for devices

Thanks for all the info! FWIW, I always carry a compass and I know how to use it. None of my devices, including the GPS, are ever attached to a computer. I don't carry a cell phone and I rarely carry a camera. It sounds like my devices can be best powered by an extra set of AA batteries...

    Back up power for devices

I use AA batteries for all my appliances on the trail: GPS, headlamps, flashlight, transistor radio, and such. That way, if I run out of battery power, the interchangeability allows me to take a battery from the headlamp to use in the GPS, or take from the radio to power a headlamp, etc. Besides...

Sabbaday Falls Trail and Parking Lot - Closed

The messy area was between the Wilderness boundary and the tourist attraction. Very unclear as to where the trail went. Perhaps there was a weather event in the time between your trip and mine that caused the trail to become less well-defined?
