    Take Me To GPS School

Thanks DougPaul. I just grabbed those manuals you posted links to. The insertion of the disk thing was more complicated than I thought. There is a tiny silver 'door' that I opened with my fingernail- heeding the cautions against using something like a pick mattock to open it. There is a little...

    Take Me To GPS School

Thanks! I just grabbed the pdf that Trail Boss linked and I see that there's also a 'unlock toggle' step (step 3). I am not mechanically inclined, so I missed that. You can install a microSD memory card in the handheld device for additional storage or pre-loaded maps. 1 Turn the D-ring...

    Take Me To GPS School

The GPS is here! The GPS IS HERE!! OMG, this is going to be so much fun to play with. Hey, I wonder how I'm supposed to put the card thingy in the slot... The directions that come with the unit are downright laughable. I'll check the online owner's manual. And, I'd better use up those...

    Take Me To GPS School

Ooooh! I wonder what the difference is between these maps and the 24 NE chip I bought. Any idea?

    Take Me To GPS School

I am pretty much in the same position as BISCUT. I hiked with someone who owned a Garmin 60CSX for many years, but I never learned how to use it. The only thing I ever would use the GPS for was to answer the age-old question, "How much farther?" On the 60CSX, I could press a button and a...

    Sleeping Bag For "Shoulder Season"

Ooops! I didn't know what you meant by the zipper, so I checked my bag. Inferno/Furnace.... similar sounding names. My bag is actually a TNF Furnace which has a normal zipper and behaves as I outlined above. Sorry for the confusion.

    Sleeping Bag For "Shoulder Season"

I have a NorthFace Inferno that I got last year with my REI dividend. I like it. It seems very lightweight and not as puffy as a similar 20 degree Mtn Hardwear down that I once owned, but it holds up to its temperature rating. I sleep hot, so ymmv. I used it through the spring and fall shoulder...

2016 Q1 White Mountain National Forest SOPA

I'm really bummed out about that shelter. It was in a nice quiet area with hardly any traffic.

    Parking on the Kanc

I thought the rule was that you had to park with all 4 wheels off the blacktop, so I'm curious to know what's going on with parking on the Kanc. I severely sprained my ankle in mid-November, (solo on the Hammond Trail, but I hiked out okay and already re-upped my fishing license for 2016- just...

    Joshua Tree

I spent about a week in JT in December 5 years ago. The weather was great (being from NH!). I had the whole park to myself! It was about 60 during the days. I would suspect that the weather would be similar in February. Carry a lot of water. If you haven't hiked in that part of the country, you...

    Dry River Campsites

Isolation west is in great shape, according to some friends who hiked it a couple weeks ago. Not sure of your route, but Dry River Shelter#3 is a lovely place to spend the evening. Take the Mt. Eisenhower Trail up to Crawford Path if your exit point is Crawford Notch. If your exit point is the...
