Mt. Langdon Shelter to Jericho Road bushwhack

Whoohoo! I just got back from doing this hike/bushwhack that I have wanted to try for so long! The Mt. Parker Trail is gorgeous! I think it just displaced the Mt. Eisenhower Trail as my favorite trail in the Southern Presies. After carrying a compass in my kit for 30+ years, I put it to use...

Water On Stairs Col Trail And Davis Path

Fresh info! There are pools of water on Stairs Col Trail at the usual crossing, about a half mile downhill from Davis Path. I did not go down to Resolution Shelter, so I cannot confirm that there is water there. However, there is plentiful water on the Mt. Parker Trail, about a half mile from...

Water On Stairs Col Trail And Davis Path

Thanks, DayTrip, I think you're right about calling it 'highly reliable' if it has water. Hey Kyle D, let me know if you want to do some creative car-spotting.

Water On Stairs Col Trail And Davis Path

I'll be in that area this weekend, too. FWIW, I'm leaning toward carrying all the water I need. Anxious to see if anyone replies...

    Trails that became bushwhacks

Mt. Langdon Trail... is an overgrown walk through a field of nettles.... and Cave Mountain is daunting terrible!

    Mt Clinton Trail

Yeehaw! I hiked the Mt. Clinton Trail today! I spotted my car at Dry River Trail and got a ride to Crawford. I hiked to Mizpah Hut and started down the Mt. Clinton Trail. It was a load of fun and fairly challenging. The top mile or so isn't too bad, just a bit overgrown. On the way down, each...

Water On Stairs Col Trail And Davis Path

Stairs Col Trail is lovely and the brook at 1.5 usually runs. I would be surprised if it were dry. The brook on the Davis Path at the 2.1 from Stairs is much more unreliable and I would not count on using it. In the same neighborhood, there is a fairly reliable water source downstream from...

    Mt Clinton Trail

Beyond that stacked birch tangle of blowdown, the trail wasn't nearly as bad. The was a clear footpath under my feet. The bigger problem is all the hobblebush which has grown in and covered the treadway. I did what I could with my clippers, but alas, I am only one person. I can't wait to try it...

    Mt Clinton Trail

Yes! You have to climb over a screwy blowdown right at the river. That is the trail! On my way up, I missed the cairns that led upstream. Instead, I 'whacked into the woods near that big rock face just as you reach the northwest side of the river. I soon saw the orange tape and followed it-...

    Mt Clinton Trail

FYI, I talked to the Forest Service on Saturday and I was told that the Mt. Clinton trail is slated for major work once they finish with the Rocky Branch Trail. Yesterday, I took a stab at it from the Dry River Trail. The crossing of the Dry River was a piece of cake because of the low water...

    Mt Clinton Trail

I agree! For those who have been there, does it seem like it would be easier to route-find by descending the trail from Dry River Cutoff, or ascending from Dry River Trail?

    Mt Clinton Trail

Same here. I'd be all for a small party- preferably with clippers! :)

    AMC trail adopter BBQ

I love La Festa! We should plan one of those pizza and beer nights that I see other VFTT folks do from time to time. Maybe in the shoulder season? Surely there are more than a few of us in the area between the Hampton and Rochester tolls :) Also, I will be at the AMC BBQ. It would be great to...

Tips/Advice on first 2 day "trip"

There are free established sites on Cherry Mtn. Road, Gale River Road, and Haystack Road, if they're not too far away for you. They are free of charge as long as you have a WMNF parking sticker or daily pass.

So sorry to hear about your friend, Ed. I remember when he was just a pup. He had a wonderful life with you. So sorry for your loss.

Sad End to a Lost Hiker with a connection to VFTT

Sad. She made such an impact on us in the short time she was on VFTT. http://www.wbir.com/story/news/2015/06/08/hiker-missing-in-gsmnp/28678953/

    Mt Davis On Montalban Ridge

Thanks for the info, Chris. What a great hike! The AMC trail bosses scouted the Davis Path last fall. They need to sort out the problems with the remoteness of the work sites in the wet and overgrown areas, and the availability of source material (appropriately sized timber or rocks) to fix the...

    Mt Davis On Montalban Ridge

Don't even think of switching to Stairs Col Trail! ;) JCarter, there are two designated campsites between the Giant Stairs and Mt. Isolation. These have the little tent sign, but they are easy to miss. They are located at N44 10 08.0 W71 19 07.6 and N44 11 16.9 W71 19 05.7. jniehof may find...

Thanks for letting me know that the road is no longer gated. Also, Stairs Col Trail is looking for an adopter if anyone is interested :)
