    Pepper spray?

FWIW, the FID card is super-easy to get. Fill out a form and show two proofs of ID. I think the cost is a couple of dollars. Also, as MJ mentioned before, you can't use bear spray on people in MA, but you can use pepper-spray that is marketed for self-defense (different chemical...

    Pepper spray?

I have pepper spray and I carry it with me on every hike. Not for bears, but for dogs. Unfortunately, over the years, I've had growling, unleashed dogs approach me/my child/my leashed dog on the trails -- some owners don't make sure their dog is either on a leash or under strict voice control...

Who's going for the 4,000 -footer winter record this year?

Alex says she wants to finish the winter 4Ks this season. If she does, that may make her one of the youngest to finish the winter list (I don't know who the youngest was or how old that person happened to be). She doesn't care about breaking any records, though, she just wants to finish that...

more New England mountain lion rumors

in response to Peakn (closed thread) Peakn asked (on another, recent thread that was closed by mods since this thread is still open and active) about recent mountain lion sightings around Welch-Dickey. He said he'd heard about five independent sightings and asked if anyone on VFTT knew...

    Tecumseh - Nice Rock Work!

Wow! Really nice work, Jeremy and Eric -- many thanks for all your hard efforts. This is my favorite mountain and trail in the Whites (for sentimental reasons), but I haven't been there in quite a while. Looking forward to hiking it again soon. That rockwork looks fantastic!

Sage Finishes the NH48 on the Tripyramids. November 6, 2011

Thanks, Karl. :) Her early age is a happenstance -- I've always felt that people should be given the opportunity to reach their potentials regardless of age. Age is never important -- it's will, capability and mental maturity that determines what someone can and cannot do (and mental maturity...

    The Dolomites

Gorgeous!! Hugh, the girls and I spent two years in a row in the Italian Alps...in fact, I discovered I was pregnant with Sage while in Cortina. A year later, Sage's first hiking experience consisted of being wrapped in a sling while we explored the area around Lagazuoi. :) On both trips...

Thanks for the green square! We probably won't do the 67, since I'm spoiled living in NH and can't imagine driving all the way to Maine on a regular basis, lol. For Alex, finishing Trailwrights 72 and the winter NH48 comes next. Don't yet know for Sage. She wants to do a lot of slides and...
