Garfield Ridge or Franconia Ridge, 1/7/2012

The girls and I did Garfield yesterday -- I'd say that snowshoes and crampons aren't needed, at least they weren't yesterday, for the Garfield Trail section of your hike. Light traction will be helpful, though. That being said, HYOH, of course.

Hiking in the winter with a Lab

Agreed, this thread has a lot of info, and, from what I've been able to see, there's a lot of good stuff here. One additional bit of advice that I don't think has yet been put forth -- after perusing this thread, take what advice you like and check it against the word of your vet. Your vet's...

Thanks so much for the green square; I'm sorry I'm late to respond, I just saw the greenie tonight. I agree with your sentiments regarding unleashed dogs. Actually, the my-unleashed-dog-has-human-rights attitude is not the majority opinion, from what I can tell from the many notes that are...

    Stealin' Ike

Have to admit, I'm feeling the same way right now. Wouldn't want the peaks competely bare, but this relatively small amount of snow feels just right. Congrats, Tom!

Hiking in the winter with a Lab

Wanted to emphasize that I am speaking from my own experience, and from the experience of my dog-owning friends -- no one can tell you exactly how every single dog will or will not react, or exactly how obvious he will be when he becomes uncomfortable, regardless of...

Hiking in the winter with a Lab

Your dog might make it very obvious if he doesn't want to hike or is becoming uncomfortable. I grew up with a Lab that would run/walk/swim in all kinds of weather and in all types of landscapes -- we took her everywhere...she was a happy dog and could handle just about anything. There was no...

Hiking from the summit of Washington....

Hi Red Oak, the girls and I saw them at the summit of North Tri and then again, down below, hopping back on their bikes near Scaur Ridge. Alex asked me, as we passed them, if hikers could use bikes for the list, and I answered "no, not if they're trying to count the peaks for the 4000 Footer...

Hi there, it was lovely meeting you today on the Tripyramids. I'm so sorry my dog was such a spaz...he hasn't acted like that for months, I thought he'd mellowed out a bit. Anyway, wish we could have spoken longer. It was nice to see that note on my car. :) Hope to run into you again...

    Hand Warmers

I suppose all that matters right now is that her hands get cold to the point of extreme pain very quickly, more so than what I think would be normal (though I'm not a MD and I have no academic expertise in this area). Sage can go for hours without any gloves at all while Alex has to have...

    Winter arrives, finally!

Both girls and I are hiking something, don't know what yet. I'll let Sage choose, since this might be the one and only time she accompanies Alex and me this winter. Max the border terrier will stay home; he won't hike a mountain again until spring 2012. What are you doing, KPMMBM?
