Thanks for the green. It does have to be super sharp. If not, it glances (bounces) off at such an angle and makes it super dangerous. The test is shaving with it (preferably your hand or forearm). It's a continuous process of learning / adjusting the swing.

Post-Irene trail assessment/work - Piper Trail, Mt. Chocorua

My intention yesterday was to assist the Forest Service crew at Saco with post-storm assessment. But as the work they were doing didn't really match with my skills, I moved on to option 2 - assessing / clearing my adopted trail - Piper on Chocorua. It has been several months since I've been...

    WMNF Closure!

I wonder if the recent lawsuits against the USFS and NPS over bear and mountain goat attacks played into this at all. Protecting themselves from lawsuits.

25 Miles in the Dry River Wilderness

Nice report. That trail would be this maintainer's dream if it wasn't miles out. Who puts a trail through a fir wave anyway!

    Irene Storm Track

Several National Forests in the southwest were closed for a time this year due to extreme fire danger. 36 CFR 261.50 through 261.53 pretty much covers it. It gives the Forest Supervisor the authority to close the forest. It this case it would be for public health and safety...

Will a little ol' hurricane slow you down?

ehh. Lot's of nice days to go hiking. Not that I mind hiking or (trail)working in the rain. Tempting weather isn't my idea of fun. I was going to do trailwork on the OBP on Saturday but lots of preparations at home to make. There will most likely be plenty of axe-work for me next week and...

    peakbaggers: please don't flag...it's trash

Oops. No harm, no foul. I was one of those workers. Join us next year to learn more about it! It is run by the NH Forest Society. As a general comment, and as mentioned previously this flagging was marked with specific work tasks.

Tuckerman Ravine Trail - Gale River Road

Here are a few photos of the work. It is a bit confusing in places and there are some screed in sections that I watched people walk right up into. Overall it was high quality work.

Mt. Paugus in a lightning storm

Well said. Great reports and pictures. My first backpack was on Camels Hump in VT and we went through a thunder storm. Scared s'less but I've been hooked on hiking ever since. The Lawrence trail looks great. WODC is a great group.
