    GPS or Map & Compass?

Fact : My Garmin 60csx died during our trip outwest. This thread makes me realize I might be a lame person because I'm using a GPS to help me get to a trailless summit. SO.... I'm not gonna get a new one, and if something happen to me I'll blame Neil (and VFTT). (BTW, if you ever got problems...

    GPS or Map & Compass?

Do you really want to bring back the discussions about elitism ? Navigation is overrated. That's my opinion.

My parents. Not very original, eh ? Very young, my father was teaching me all kind of things... -Don't fight the bugs, stay calm and don't scratch yourself if get bite. -Don't bring a water bottle, just drink each time you cross a brook. -Be quiet, and maybe we'll see wildlife. -Always...

Great small hikes near Los Angeles, CA ?

Does anyone has suggestions for great small hikes in the City of Angels area ? Pasadena is where I'll stay. We'll be with 8-10 years old, and it has to be maximum 4h RT. We would like to have views of the city and the ocean. Canyons, waterfalls, summits, it doesn't matter. Thanks !!! :)

Children, sports, hiking, and acceptable risk

When I'm back from hiking a mountain with my kids (does elevation matters ?), I always feel so good about it, I don't care about what other parents thinks. I know it's good for them, and it is not against any laws, point final. To me, nuts are the ones that are waiting for other people's...

Quebec City: hiking and other things to do

Hi Marty ! If you have time, try hiking in Charlevoix : Mont du Lac des Cygnes, Parc des Hautes-Gorges. Take the ferry accross the St.Laurence River instead of the bridge, for pretty views of Chateau Frontenac (Traversier Québec-Lévis) Good poutine : Chez Ashton (many locations, nothing...

Westkill (Eastern approach) April 24 2011

Icy trail starting at elevation 2600', and full snow cover above 3000'. Snowshoes worked great, especially the blue ones ;). On the western slopes, going toward Ste Annes, there was occasional patches of snow and very little ice. Later that day I did North Dome and Sherrill, both have maybe a...
