    Wind Stopping Base Layer Advice

I think I did try some of the VBL shirts awhile back, but didn't like the perpetual clammy feeling at all, and they didn't seem to function as intended ( at least for me) in shutting down the sweat mechanism. If I remember right, I would get so wet that the perspiration would run all the way...

    Wind Stopping Base Layer Advice

Yes, it's definitely not for everyone, and something I only do under the specific conditions I mention to keep my insulating layer from taking on moisture from perspiration ( where it could freeze within the insulation), particularly at higher exertion levels ( I generally would not do this...

    Wind Stopping Base Layer Advice

I think you misunderstand Jake. I am not using a vapor barrier, I am using a breathable shell. I'd love to hear what's worked for you above treeline over the years.

    Wind Stopping Base Layer Advice

Um, no. I sweat a lot regardless. This is a method I have used for years. YMMV.

    Wind Stopping Base Layer Advice

A bit OT - I don't use a wind-stopping base layer, but do sometimes wear a wind shell over my base layer but underneath an insulating non-windproof synthetic jacket (rather than over it). Because I sweat a lot, I find this odd combination works well - it prevents my perspiration from getting...

NH Proposes Fee If People Need To Be Rescued

Helos - They save money or cost too much? Possibly of related interest

NH Proposes Fee If People Need To Be Rescued

I have posted it too many times to remember, but it evidently needs repeating: ( From NASAR's position paper ) Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion on this - I just happen to value the opinion of the people actually doing the SAR work a bit more.

Your Top Ten Photos of 2012!

Beautiful shots by all! To narrow it down a bit, these would be what I would call my most meaningful local shots of 2012, images that I can immediately associate with a beautiful hike or special event in the Northeast. Supermoon from Calais, Vermont Buddies on Lafayette Hikers Departing...

NH Proposes Fee If People Need To Be Rescued

$18 a YEAR? Yeah, that seems over the top. I'd like to hear the explanation as to how NH has to charge 6 times what Colorado does. That said, I would still buy one - the program is going to need some fine tuning, and adjusting the cost of the fees will certainly be one of them.

NH Proposes Fee If People Need To Be Rescued

It might be worth fleshing out the differences between what is being proposed for NH, and the current system used in Colorado ( CORSAR card). Two things that stand out right away are: 1. In Colorado, buying a card is voluntary, whereas in NH, no card (or NH lisc.), you pay. 2. You can pay...

NYT article on the Tunnel Creek avalanche

Brilliantly designed piece - really engaging reading with the visuals. Some interesting lessons about how group dynamics, peer pressure, and skiing status can intersect in a dangerous way.

NH Proposes Fee If People Need To Be Rescued

Thanks, Tim. All I could find so far, using "rescue" as a search term, was this, but nothing on how negligence is determined other than stating that F&G determines it:

NH Proposes Fee If People Need To Be Rescued

Thanks for that correction. Do you have any links for more reading on the process? EDIT: All I can find is this: It still sounds like the F&G is making the call, and just sending it through for approval. Shouldn't those "guidelines" be public?

NH Proposes Fee If People Need To Be Rescued

The same people who get the funds from a "yes they were negligent" decision, no? Which also cannot be challenged, if I remember correctly. Not exactly a Kangaroo Court, but it's a pretty huge conflict of interest to ignore IMHO.

NH Proposes Fee If People Need To Be Rescued

Playing Dumb For Dollars From the linked article: Really? Maj. Jordan has never heard the position of the Mountain Rescue Service on charging for rescue, even in the wake of the Scott Mason case in NH, after which the MRS re-affirmed their position on charging for rescue, based on the...

Climate Change Threatens Ski Industry, Leaving Slopes Bare

And if climate change isn't real, we don't need wind turbines. See how easy that is? It just takes Magical Thinking.

Windmills getting closer to the Whites - second and third Plymouth-area wind farms

Interesting statement in fine print at the bottom of that page: I can understand opposition to wind power based on all kinds of criteria, but the notion that they are USING a significant amount of power vs. MAKING it sure ain't one of them. Are they seriously suggesting that the wind industry...

Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) has been sold...

I'll wander into EMS in Burlington, VT once in awhile to get something like a pair of socks or something on sale, but generally their product line seems to have degraded IMO. If you are in B-town, Outdoor Gear Exchange has a vastly superior selection of up-to-date gear. (To their credit, the...

"Cracker Jack'D is a product line specifically developed for adult consumers and will not be marketed to children," This "jacked" food theme lives on. Have to wonder who they are appealing to.
