NH Hikesafe Card in NH House study committee

I think that's way off the mark, but we are all just speculating, right? The CORSAR card has been quite successful, something which would be unlikely if it was just irresponsible trail runner types buying them. I say we give it a chance before we condemn the idea.

NH Hikesafe Card in NH House study committee

That's kind of how I feel about it. A similar program has been quite successful in Colorado, and it doesn't appear to be having that effect. Change is hard. I'm hoping that enough people will eventually buy them to be a positive step.

Beware the Verglas Algae of August!

Yesterday while descending the Long Trail South from Camel's Hump on a running loop I do frequently ( up Burrows, across LT South, then Forest City to close the loop), I did a little unplanned dance while stepping down a rounded boulder at the top of a steep pitch - the culprit being a patch of...

New Hampshire 200 Highest and New Hampshire 300 Highest Lists

Ah-hah! One of the stealthy types! I shouldn't have painted with such a broad brush - it's more of a sub-set of the peakbagging world that I have issues with. I also think you are right about the lack of response by many members on this thread. There are plenty of people who engage in it who...

New Hampshire 200 Highest and New Hampshire 300 Highest Lists

If by "going ballistic", you mean mercilessly mocking the feeble attempts of a handful of people ( ok, person) to enforce a set of rules on an event which has nothing to do with their hiking organization, then, yeah....guilty. Something which is actually consistent with my general thoughts...

New Hampshire 200 Highest and New Hampshire 300 Highest Lists

I wonder what John Muir would make of this thread. ( I'm going to bookmark it in case anyone ever asks me why I don't do "peakbagging")

New Hampshire 200 Highest and New Hampshire 300 Highest Lists

I'll add this bizarre thread to another one of the "Hundred And One Reasons I Don't Do Lists". Crikey.

    Bear Canister/Bag Recommendations

I've used the Odor Proof "Opsaks" a few times in the PNW. They are basically just a high-tech plastic bag, and probably a little bit less protection than what most people want around these parts. They do work well as liners for traditional bear vaults ( and/or while preparing food) to keep the...

Use of Drones for Environmental Conservation Enforcement

Some pretty amazing mapping projects can be undertaken with all manner of drones - like the project Sensefly took on, mapping the entire Matterhorn with small fixed wing drones that would fly in precise patterns from different launch points:

Andrew Thompson breaks NH48 speed record

I am not sure about the accuracy of our 11 year old notes, but we had 184 miles and 62,400'+-. Your Mileage ( and experience along the way) May Vary.

Andrew Thompson breaks NH48 speed record

Indeed - very well done by Andrew and his crew! Huge congrats for pulling it off in such a mixed bag of weather. I haven't met Andrew, but had a feeling he was a phenomenally tough character just from speaking with him briefly on the phone. The forecast didn't even seem to be an issue to him...

    Northeast’s Fastest Known Times

Awesome feat by Andrew T and his team, especially with the less than ideal weather window. Well done! I'm really glad to see that it was someone from NH - I have always felt that the "locals" should be the ones to hold these records, and Andrew certainly fits the bill. Also....another upcoming...

Maker of Vibram Five Fingers Agrees to Pay Millions to Settle Lawsuit

There is a lot of misinformation floating around about that incident. McD's was well aware of the scalding issue for YEARS, and did nothing.

Self Rescue after fall in Great Gully

I'm glad to see they are considering his previous experience doing such things. But then again, it's hard to say if this would be "different" if large expenses were incurred.

    Mt. Washington Snowfields Avalanche 3/29/14

I freaked out a little when I saw this a few days ago - that snowfield was always my favorite "direct finish" off of the Lion Head trail.

    Moonlight Hike locations, Sat 3/15

Not the easiest hike ever, but the view of the moon from Franconia Ridge can be pretty nice - this was from Little Haystack:

    Trail respect

A winter classic. This is similar to campaigning to stop people from driving 50 mph in the fast lane. Good Luck.

Poll: Hiking or Climbing Solo - Do you do it? Ever?

99% solo. I start at weird times and have strange photographic objectives. Hard to find company for that, which is fine by me. Mountains are one of the most magical places to be alone. Thanks for posting this - it's a good indicator.
