Where is the best place to get mountain weather reports?

Kevin, I just called to find out and spoke to Mark Breen himself, who said that it's generally posted between 6:30 and 7. Not ideal, but I have found even their insights as to what is happening the next day are second to none.

Where is the best place to get mountain weather reports?

Being in Vermont, the first place I go is Eye on The Sky, which has a detailed mountain forecast for the ADK, Vermont, and the Whites. The summary they give as to what is going to happen over the course of the day is excellent, and I have found many, many times that their take on mountain...

A Fine Winter Day On The Crawford Path

Thanks aj and Driver - I'm so glad I was able to be up there on such a great day! I went down the Ammo - the short "stop motion" clip in the video where I am "skating" on a snowshoe towards Washington from the hut was just messing around with that technique. The wind was still pretty gusty in...

    When gear goes bad...

Favorite catastrophic gear failure story - one of my friends had brought a tent on an overnight that he had unwisely been using as an all-summer long hippie yurt of sorts ( against my warnings not to). We set the tent up in the early evening, and went about making dinner. It was kind of gusty...

Helmet cam captures ice climber's fall

Given the amount of GoPro cameras now engulfing the world (saw two helmet mounted cameras on hikers just in the past two weeks), I have a feeling we are going to be a seeing a lot of "Be a HERO" footage that may be in the same category. He's amazingly fortunate to have survived that ride, given...

Adam Wilcox completes first Winter Full Hut Traverse - Solo

Adam Wilcox completes first Winter Full Hut Traverse - Solo

Pretty Nice Day for That Kind Of Wanderin' What the day looked like: (This image was taken at 8:50am - I had started up from Crawford Notch, and was waiting for Adam on Monroe, guessing that he would hop over it to avoid the steep chute on the "horse trail" around Monroe. As it was, he went...

That wraps it up pretty well! Glad to see you were able to get on on such a super day. Perfect music for your journey, BTW.

    Halfway House Trail, Mt Mansfield?

It's easy enough to find, there is a sign for the trail on the CCC road. Not sure if it gets much winter use.

Extreme Sledding in or near the Whites

Burrows Path on Camel's Hump is another great ride, best done late in the day to avoid uphill traffic.

    Adams in the Fog

Like a handful of other hopefuls, I hit the Presidential Range again last Tuesday after seeing that the forecast called for an "in and out of the clouds" kind of day. Or at least that was the forecast from the Rockpile.(Interestingly, the Eye On The Sky forecast called for the Presi Range to be...
