Winter one-day Presidential Traverse vs. cycling century or running a marathon?

Surface conditions can be almost as important as the weather. Just the change from last Friday to yesterday was pretty substantial - Friday was not too bad on the Gulfside, but yesterday it was full of huge, energy-sucking soft drifts - just from the minor snow event we had. And the snow depth...

    A Bluebird Day

Thanks skiguy - the polarizer is mounted on an adapter made by Snake River Prototyping, which just snaps on - you can then mount any 55mm filter. And thanks for the link - I'll definitely be checking that out! I can see using a head or chest mount when it's windy - that's one of the weak spots...

More Video Trickery Another fun accessory I brought for the GoPro last Friday is a simple stabilizing unit for ( somewhat) smoothing out video taken while in motion. ( I can't stand shaky video - I'll get motion sick just trying to edit it!) I used a Hague MMC, although it's fairly easy to...

Not quite on Mansfield 2/24/13 - Mistakes and consequences

Yup, that all sounds about right for the LT approach from the notch! Between the confusion created by all the ski tracks and proximity to the runs, the poor signage and blazing, the drifting above the shelter all the way to Eagle Pass, and the final spooky climb up the headwall, it can be a very...

    A Bluebird Day

...and the birds were flocking together. You couldn't swing an Excel spreadsheet without hitting some grinning peakbagger, I say. It was great to meet and see so many people from VFTT in the Presidential Range on Friday, a superb day to really relish the time above treeline, the sunshine...

Are we hardwired to hate exercise? article

I think this is essential - being very active at a young age embeds habits that CAN stay with you for life. I biked 8 miles each way to school through junior and high school, which I think had a lot to do with keeping a mindset about you that a high level of activity is your "normal" state of...

Mt. Tom, Field and Willey on 2-16-13

Such a fashionable turtleneck on that tree. Sounds like your hike was a success all around!

Franconia Ridge - Feb. 14, 2013. A Valentine from Lady Light

Twas a magnificent afternoon on the ridge. There aren't many other times that I can remember where sleeping an extra 3 hours in the car at the trailhead worked out quite so well.

NH governor proposes general fund $$ for SAR

I guess that depends on the mentality of the people running the state. Some states might say to themselves "Hey, these rescues are costing us a little bit of money, but considering that we spend millions on promoting tourism, perhaps we should just accept this expenditure as part of doing...

    Falling Waters Trail

Yes, pretty remarkable difference! (I was up there last Sunday afternoon as well after your group had gone through.) I prefer the frosty version, but both days were pretty nice!

    You Vill PAY.

Just noticed this sign stapled to a tree on at the base of the Falling Waters Trail. Can't say I remember seeing this one before - is this part of the new campaign (to get people hiking in Maine and VT)? Nice job on reversing the colors, so that the "YOU WILL PAY THE COSTS" text will flash...

    Falling Waters Trail

I was on the loop this afternoon - I wore snowshoes from the trailhead to the summit of Lafayette via the Bridle Path, and then barebooted down the ridge (with some screws, natch). The normally icy ramp a bit below the summit of Lafayette is still pretty tame, and the chutes leading to the...

Using a Hydration Bladder in the Winter

I still use a bladder most of the time in winter, which works pretty well down to about 20 degrees or so if you evacuate the tube. If it's colder, I just tuck the tube ( with valve closed) into the top of the hydration sleeve, next to my body heat. I have had less freezing issues than with...

Views from Wherever - What are your favorite viewpoints for various summits?

The first one to pop into my head is the view of the Twins from 302 coming into Twin Mountain from the West:

    Views from the Carribean?

Dominica was my favorite - peakbaggers types can even get a 4k - Mt. Diablotin is 4747'. Someone on views did a report on Diablotin, I am sure you can find it with a search. Much of it is hiking and climbing on tree roots and limbs that are suspended over a steep muddy trail - very interesting...

NH Proposes Fee If People Need To Be Rescued

    1. Is the hiker from Mass. ? 2. Is the piggy bank low ? 3. Can we get away with it? Sounds like a fair process to me.

Versa Capital - new owners of EMS lays off 110, restructure company

That's cool that Ragged is still making stuff - somehow I thought that was a thing of the past. According to the OGE site, they have been there 16 years. I haven't had the best of luck with EMS gear myself, but that can be an individual kind of thing, so I'll stop there ;).

Versa Capital - new owners of EMS lays off 110, restructure company

Mirabela - agree on all of that! The atmosphere reminds me of what Ragged Mountain used to be when they were still making their own line of gear - slightly granola flavored, but knowledgeable ;)

Versa Capital - new owners of EMS lays off 110, restructure company

The EMS in Burlington, VT generally has very few customers milling around, whereas the nearby Outdoor Gear Exchange is bustling with activity all day long. Granted, being on Church Street doesn't hurt, but I think it has much more to do with the great selection of gear. I think EMS went...
