    Over mitts

Lahouts in Lincoln has a good supply of mittens and gloves. I can't remember the brand, but a couple of years ago I got some mittens that had a removable half-glove inside for $65. I call it a half-glove because it's like a glove with 2 fingers and a thumb; your index and middle finger go in...

    Sleds revisted..

I have one of these as well as a Swiss Bob sled. The Swiss Bob slides a little better. The TSL Quicky sled might be a better option if you don't want to go that fast. It's also lighter than the Swiss Bob. The only thing I don't like is having the handle portion between your legs...it hurts...

    Mt. Monadnock Rescue

I got caught in the dark on Monadnock on my first-ever hike in 1987. I actually refused an offer of a flashlight from a ranger on the summit, thinking I wouldn't need it. We got about half-way down before it got completely dark. As I stumbled down the trail, just feeling along with my feet...

GPS: Do I want one with mapping?

I was holding it flat in my hand with the display face up, watching as the trip meter kept adding to the 'Stopped' time while I walked. This was on the lower part of the Brook trail on Mt. Major, not exactly a spot with heavy tree cover. I'd really like to be able to just carry a...

GPS: Do I want one with mapping?

Not sure if I'm alone in this, but I haven't had much luck with getting good satellite reception while using some of the cheaper Garmin models. I gave up on my eTrex Legend years ago because it just couldn't consistently get a good satellite signal once I was in the woods. Just this month, I...

    Hand Warmers

Thanks for the warning Dennis...I've been carrying some of these around for years, I rarely use them, so it's a good reminder to have some fresh ones. And thanks for the recommendation Maddy...just ordered some hand warmers and toe warmers from LL Bean. Nice to see that there's free shipping...

    Icespikes - new traction aid

Some of the claims are interesting: They won't get lost or fall out. Yeah, sure they won't! Adds no additional weight. Wow! A scientific breakthrough, weightless screws! 10 times more durable (than screw shoes). How is this measured exactly? Will not damage the shoe sole. I guess that...

"Is it worth it?" My take on early season ice climbing.

I have to disagree Bob, nothing is better than that. :D

    Moving out West.....and bye-bye hike 5/21

Mats, it was nice to have met you briefly (I think it was on North Kinsman a couple of years back). Good luck in your new home!

Biggest D'oh "That Was Stupid" Moment

I once met a friend at a park-and-ride lot, and before getting in his car, I grabbed two boots out of my trunk that were from different pairs. They were both brown, and in the dark, I didn't realize what I had done until we got to the trailhead, and I had two left boots. All I could say was...

    Strapping Snowshoes on your Ruck

I have a winter pack with a back pocket like the one vegematic mentioned, but sometimes when I switch to my spring/summer pack, I'll start taking my old MSR Denali Evo Ascents (vs. my newer Tubbs Flex Alps), because they're only 22" long, and I'll attach them with bungee cords to the top of the...
