    2011 New Slides?

With the violent storms of last year, several new slides opened up across the DAKs. I think I assumed they'd start getting skied pretty much right away; but with the equally weird weather this winter, I wonder: have any of these new slides been skied yet? Strange... Thanks, --Mike.

    Shuttle Connection Lincoln

A buddy and I used their service for just this kind of thing (Falling Waters to Crawford Notch to Pinkham Notch) in 2005. They delivered as promised for a reasonable fee. Thumbs up for my one data point.

Runnable 4 to 15 mile loop within ~30min of Conway?

How do you think I found these places? Actually, in the case of Mountain Pond, I gladly give the nod to the North Country Angler. But Town Hall Road, the back side of Jackson (Thorn Hill Road), Chatham and Evans Notch and the whole of the Wild River were all discovered by just deliberately...

Runnable 4 to 15 mile loop within ~30min of Conway?

Sometimes I see these, and just pass over them, assuming someone will jump in with the obvious answer that I come up with, but then, sometimes that doesn't happen. Now, I haven't been there, but The Moats seems to be just what you're looking for. Would those who've done them agree? The...

    How old is this crampon?

I have been using new-old-stock Vietnam-era Army fatigues from the 70's; they use identical webbing for their cinch-straps (instead of a belt) and thigh straps. So, my guess is that whatever you have there is from that era. Would you call that a data point?

    Foot warmers on top?

Oh, uh, I guess I should follow up: I used the foot-warmers adhered to the top of my outer (heavy wool) socks all weekend (different socks, different warmers, each day), in the Carter Range, on Mount Tremont and on Lonesome Lake. While I have definitely found the lower limit for my Limmers...

    Foot warmers on top?

Ah, this is what I was after: what's the downside warning? So, anecdotally, we have testimony from users that, assuming a sock layer (nested 'tween two seems the play), people are using them on top with no negative consequences, is that right? Do people primarily (1) nest them or (2) place...

Mass hiker dies on Mt Washington

http://vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?t=43375 Horrible, too many, too many.

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

I must be reading this wrong, so I'll ask it like this: if I hike up from Lost Pond to the E peak and cross over the top, meeting Wildcat Ski Patrol atop D Peak, will I be able to pass uncontested to C, B and then A? Surely that route is open without a dispensation?

    Flume & Liberty, 1/4

Who was that Sox player whose first MLB at-bat was a homer? Great pics, ow2010, and welcome! It's funny how cool the Bondcliff-like shot looks in the flat light, was that on the top of the Flume slide? Great stuff!

    Foot warmers on top?

Thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for (free data!). I wanted to know the downside (so to speak) of putting them differently, I'll give it a try. --Mike.

    Foot warmers on top?

Why do (chemical) foot warmer instructions indicate placement under the ball of the foot and not atop it? I don't like having yet another layer in there (let alone one that doesn't run the whole length) and under-foot is worse. What's wrong with putting them on top? I guess I'll try it out...

Mount Monadnock State Park ranger Jim Johnson

Wow, how horrible. Thank you, kerry13, for sharing their memory; it's possible I may have met Mr. Johnson at Monadnock. Lights have gone out, I'm sorry.

    Geology of Mt. Washington

You're welcome! And you hit on a relevant point there: "...long periods." It's really not a long period, in any of these cases. It does butt up against the exhilaration (going up) and afterglow, tempering both. In kids, the 'up' part can take long enough that they really do get annoyed, but...

    Geology of Mt. Washington

I assumed someone woulda got to this by now, but since not.... Also, I may be wrong; it just seems obvious, but I never actually heard it parsed. When ascending the final summit cone of all of the northern Presidentials, including Mount Washington, the trail becomes a rock-hop of sharp-edged...

    Mt. Monadnock Rescue

Ehh, don't worry about it! They're in line for a little razzing; I was just givin' 'em the old Yogi Berra routine, and I've broken most of the rules in the book, so I'm not judging.... But..., don't you think they deserve just a little good-natured ribbing? I'd think they'd be grateful we...

New Year's Winter Presidential Traverse, in 12 Pictures of Course - 1/1/2012

Thank you! I thought that chrome-dome was Ike! That's an interesting vantage with the rise to the right, a little tricky. Oh, and it looks like the hike was fun, too! I've been thinking that this is the perfect time to snag winter Pressies. Great stuff, congratulations again.

Yeah, but I heard nobody ever goes there anymore, it's too crowded.

New Year's Winter Presidential Traverse, in 12 Pictures of Course - 1/1/2012

Wow. If only to write 'wow,' I signed in. These are amazing shots! Great light, great composition, great focus & depth of field, really amazing. Picture 6, please, where exactly were you? Is it Eisenhower from somewhere north of George, with George's summit to the left? The clouds, the...

Those #$%! teases at NWS Gray

No, no, no: "Aaarrgggghhhhhhh!", try it again. Look, you really must be more zen about this. One cooks with what's available in the cupboard sometimes, and this is one of those times. Just try to go with it, hike Isolation or something, and make what one can! I have no expectations for next...
