    Rainier Ranger Shot

My understanding was that his military experience was as a communications specialist. Doesn't sound like he saw combat but can't be sure. This individual may have had serious issues before he went into the service. Hopefully we will find out more as things unfold. Keith

Yellowstone grizzly attack --- NPS report

Sorry. I can agree to disagree but my opinion is that this was a dangerous animal and should have been put down. As far as how much the rangers "know". I consider them to be complicit in the second killing. They are not impartial observers and they have a dog in the fight. I take their...

Yellowstone grizzly attack --- NPS report

On page 95 of the report there is a map. GPS coordinates where taken and overlayed onto the map. There was no mention that the bear dragged the victim, didn't see that listed but, the distances measured are 100 meters to where the victims saw the sow. There is another 500 meters from where they...

Yellowstone grizzly attack --- NPS report

What strikes me as odd in this are the distances involved. If I read this correctly, they viewed the sow 100 yards distant. The couple ran another 500 yards away from the bear before the bear made contact. I cannot see how this is considered a defensive attack. These people were no threat to the...

    Rescue Wagon

Yep. I understand. We still do litter carries sometimes on areas that this can't get through. Usually though, we are lucky that those distances are usually less than a mile. They look like some pretty good stuff. Well thought out. Keith

    Rescue Wagon

This is what we use. The water bladder slides out easily and we can transport patients in the back with an attendant. I have seen lots of variations of those but some of those are pretty cool.

New Hampshire Fish and Game Search and Rescue Funding Hearing

Commitee study It appears in the findings that while SAR is no longer funded by funds from the hunters and fisherman. The findings state: "Money is taken from the fish and game fund, which includes fees from hunters and fisherman, to make up the deficit in the search and rescue account." from...

The latest GPS thhread - Garmin or Delorme

After many years in the Garmin camp I have changed over to the Delorme. Here is a link to the data that can be put on both the computer and GPS. I have a very low opinion of Mapsource and in particular its data. Delorme screen shots Keith

    O Captain! My Captain! - 11/5/11

That author was me. :D I have looked to find that reference, which I thought was in an older version of my White mountain guide, but haven't had luck in finding it. Keith

Am I crazy? Winter overnight in the Whites

The short answer is no, your not crazy. I have done many winter overnights as have many on this board. Winter is truly an incredible time to go camping. Saying that, winter leaves less room for mistakes so preparation and knowledge is key. Vegematic has some good ideas. Also, don't forget about...

New Hampshire Fish and Game Search and Rescue Funding Hearing

What is going to be harder to gauge is if some of these people (the poorly prepared ones) did die. We all know the kinds of headlines that generates. What would need to be gauged is if those headlines leads to many more people or even god forbid, most people, making themselves more prepared...

New Hampshire Fish and Game Search and Rescue Funding Hearing

Again, I wasn't there but far more likely I can tell you we have several nursing homes in my town and none of the alarm systems they have differentiates between medical and fire when the alarm goes out. We don't know what it is when it comes in so we send both fire and EMS, until it is verified...

New Hampshire Fish and Game Search and Rescue Funding Hearing

I suspect that you might misunderstand what you are actually seeing. Police are there because in many towns they are first responders. Medical personal might be there either because they are part of the fire service or the EMD requires them based upon the call. The firefighters might be there...

    SPOT vs FAST FIND

I have a yearly contract. They automatically renew the contract unless you cancel something like 2 weeks prior to the renewal date. They send a notification something like 2 weeks ahead of the renewal. Failing to cancel in that time-frame causes the automatic charge and renewal. If you don't...

    SPOT vs FAST FIND

I purchased a spot gen 2 and have had very good luck with it. With some common sense I think that it performs extremely well. I agree with Nessmuk that many of the complaints are likely caused by a lack of understanding of how the device works. Like everyone has stressed, its not a PLB but I...

    Hiker Lost Near Isolation

Yep. I started doing this (letting them lead) with my boys when they were around 5. I use to let them lead all the time. I would ask them if they are on the trail and how they could prove it. When we would walk off the trail I would teach them what to do to get back. I would teach them...
