Do I need a Soft Shelll?

thanks for posting the softshell offshoot. When temps are warm I carry or wear (if it's raining) a rain jacket, but carry or wear a softshell on cold or winter days. It's my standard outerwear in winter. When not on hikes, we're out for hilly, exposed doghikes on the local golf course. 5 miles...

Ferrosi looks interesting. I think something a little longer though. Does it have any lining? Thank you.

    replacement softshell recommendations

My long-loved OR softshell is showing its age, and I just sent an even older Mountain Hardware softshell back to have the blown-out pit zip replaced. Looking for advice on a replacement. Both softshells have good hoods, very thin fleece linings. One has pit zips. Neither were super expensive. I...

    Polk/Sled Trip In Adirondacks?

We reinforced the KMart sled nose with angle aluminum and attached to Kelty frame pack waist bands. Side hill/icy always had the potential for a yard sale.

    Polk/Sled Trip In Adirondacks?

In the 70's and 80's, camping was necessary to get many of the trailed and untrailed peaks. We modified orange KMart sleds and used them often. Happy to offer advice for destinations. Works best on trails that haven't been postholed to death and where trails are sidehills. Some nice destinations...

I'll take the blame for 'no GPS tracks here'. Darren and I discussed and he supported.

General Mountaineering Ice Axe vs An Actual Ice Axe

Handy on the steeps as a portable handrail. Great to blow up snow bombs by flicking it so the snow doesn't end up on your head and back. Handy to hook and pull yourself up. For camping, anchor for tent. Useful to break up stream ice to melt water for stove. Lots of others.

    Black Bobcat

Hillwalker, great shot. To me it looks like a fisher, with the tail hidden behind it. Mostly because of the head shape.

How long has VFTT been in existence?

Darren started VFTT on it's own. When the AMC forums turned into the Wild West, longtime users will recall that we inherited the now former-members who's goal was to troll and cause problems here. Took Darren and I much of a year to clean house. Happy that Dave was asked to join as a moderator...

    Sponsorship and Risk

ChrisB, you raise a very good question. I've long-thought that sponsorship puts pressure on athletes to stay with or ahead of expectations. At the same time, it's been previously pointed out that YouTube and GPro cameras have tempted many to try difficult routes or other athletic feats near or...

    Post-knee replacement hiking ?

I went from a neoprene knee brace with internal metal hinges to something much better. My Sports med doc proscribed the Ossur Unloader brace. Weighs next to nothing, clamps on shin and knee, lots of straps but it really seems to work. Downhills are also my issue. I've done all the longer and...

    Post-knee replacement hiking ?

Reading and mulling. Right now there isn't an urgency as I'm using a special stabilizing brace. Just looking for other opinions and stories as I know it's coming. Thank you.
