    Sharpening microspikes

Grinder wheel will sharpen quickly but soften the metal. Make a wooden jig to hold the MSs in a vise or hold with large pliers and use a large ******* file. It's tedious but taking your time will restore most of the sharp points.

    Gene Daniel Has Passed Away

I've hiked with Gene, but it's been many many years since then. He was a walking encyclopedia of backcountry knowledge and a first rate companion. My condolences to the Daniell family.

MSR has a new binding system

Appears you can't get them to work with existing MSRs though, or am I wrong? Thanks for posting. Looks like an improvement for those of us susceptible to cold hands and fingers.

Black bear causing concerns in Pemi around Owl's Head

'Yellow - Yellow' was the nickname for an ADK bear, the name coming from the two times the bear was captured and relocated due to aggressive approaches to campers. Would walk right into a leanto and scatter the occupants to get at food and packs. Eventually had to be killed. I don't remember if...

    adk Q

In the 70's and early 80's, there were many confusing herd paths. One led downstream toward the ranch. When rangers would get a call that a hiker was overdue here, they would often begin the search downstream. Pre-electronic navigating, once down on the stream you had no viz to be able to back...

    Hudson Highlands Hiking

Excellent. Always enjoy your trips and posts. I've always avoided the area as I hike with a dog and have read that there are copperheads and some timber rattlers. More recently, lots of ticks. BTW, do you have a regular blog? Looking forward to your CA trip and photos.

Is greeting other folks on trail with "Hi!" part of hiking etiquette?

I'm seldom on busy trails but if there's a lot of traffic, I look for eye contact and most people at least nod. With less hiker traffic I always say "hi" or 'Isn't it a Great Day". Always enjoy when people want to engage.

Hikers struck by lightning in Colorado

The treeline on the 13k-14k peaks is very low. You're a moving target. We always do a very early start and get down low with the afternoon follies begin. You can see the clouds building and they are on you before you know it.

    2019 Black Fly Season

They've been flitting for about a week in the Helderbergs outside of Albany, NY for a week. Same in the Catskills. The males, the ones that bite, should be out shortly.
